Hubert is one of: the old Anglo -Sax oni$iven names which survived the in fluence of the Norman invasion, not in thls case in spite a it, but probably, in a Measurebecause of it, for Hubert was a Normafl given name as well as Saxon, The Normans were a Teutonic race, though they had adopted a tongue as ,the result of their invasions of North- ern France which was a form of Latin developed first under Celtic influence -• and then under that of their own orig- inal Teutonic speech, In consequence, ,though the language they spoke was practically -the forerunner of modern French, their nomenclature remained more largely Teutonic. The name means, literally, "bright - hued," For "lliewe" was the Anglo. Somali forerunner of our modern word "flue," just as "beohrt" or "boort" was, the ancestor of our modern 'bright",. and in Germany found its counterpart in "brecht," - It became a family name through its use to designate parentage, at first either with the ending •"son" or the Norman prefix "Fitz," which, incident- ally, was the form into which the old Latin word "duns" finally became shortened and twisted through the .suc- cessive• influences of .Celtic and Teu- tonic tongue's ..in Northern yrance. Whenever you see a name ending in "ton," however, it's a fairly safe+as- sumption that it's English, that the "ton" means "town" and' that the family name was first the name of a place. The use of i1ace names as surnames Carne about in the first place to ciesig- nate the individual by the loo.ality Ile had come from, They were never ap- plied to persons who still dwelt there for the reason that such use of the name would have constituted no dif- ferentiation among people all of whom lived there, The only exception to this is in the case of families which exer- cised overlordship over the place men tioned. Two explanations are offered of how the place name originated. One as- oribes the first syllable to the, feet that the locality was thickly grown with burrs, the other to a now obsolete word denoting a hill. The chances are that the latter is the true explanation in the majority of cases. ,» Not Broken As Yet. Mother—"That girl- next door; has broken the record playing the pheao- graph!" Can be Rad Through the Rich, Red "`Blood Made by Dr. Wil - liars' Pink Pills. There comes a time in the life of- ulni.ost every girl when weakness at- tacks her. The strain upon her blood supply is too great, and there comes. headaches and backaches, loss of ap- petite, attacks of dizziness, heart palpi- tation, a constant weariness and a tendency to a decline. All these symp- tonis may not be present in. any par- ticular case, but the presence of any one Of then shows the necessity for prompt treatment. And the very best treatment is through the blood -making tonic qualities of J)r. Williams' Pink Pills. They are the one thing needed tomaintain the health of growing girls and women of mature years. Here is a.bit of strong proof:—Miss Matilda Breen, King Highway, New- castle, N.B., says:—"I was in an ex- tremely run-down and nervoes condi- tion. I was losing flesh, had a poor appetite, always pale, and suffered fre- quently from headaches. In fact my ;condition can best be described as iniserabie.' I had tried several treat- ments but they did nothelp me in the least. Then, reading one day about Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, I decided to try them. After using three boxes I was much improved, but continued un- til I had taken six boxes, with the re- sult that I am now well and strong, with good color and a hearty appetite. Iii:view of what Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have done for me I cannot re- edmmena them too highly." Canadian live stock -men are intense- ly' interested in the extension of .the market for beef 'and beef products. In order, to. compete succ ssfull against p e 3 other countries we must improve the quality of our live stock. The Argentine Republic is without a doubt the hardest competitor for the English market. To -day they are able to place a large quantity of beef on the English market at a very much lower -price than Canadians. This pro- duct is very much superior in quality. Therefore, the question confronting us is, what can we do to beat this com- petition? • As we look over the reports of auc- tion sales held in `Great Britain dur- ing the last ten years, we find that the big ranch owner's . of the Argentine have paid enormous prices for bulls to head' their pure bred herds. Men who know conditions in the Ar- gentine say ,that these high priced bulls are first used on the smaller herds and later turned in on the range of cattle. It is little wonder that the quality of beef. animals in that coun- try is exceptionally high. Thus, we can readily see that we must follow the example of our strongest competit- ors and use only high class pure bred bulls on all our grade herds. Figures from otlr Canadian stock yards show that only about 2% of the stock marketed during 1919 was fit for export trade. To those who sit down and figure out the loss sustained, the figures are startling. The average farmer 'Gees about $30I to $40 per head on steers bred from grade sires. Pacts prove that on every instance, the steers from pure bred sires, not only sell for higher prices, but make more rapid and more economical gains than those sired by grade bulls. While we 'are Well aw ai'e that high prices are obtainable for alniost any kind of beef animal, yet it is very clear, to those who follow market re- ports closely, that the low grade stock are tite first to suffer- when the rnar- kete take a downward drop. It is, therefore, quite clear that the use of grade sires is a losing proposi tion viewed from any angle. It is high thne that we discard inferi- or bulls whether they be grade or. scrub purebreds, This is 'important Lecause of. the fact that the bull used op a herd in fluences all the year's of calf crops, Discard the inferior type of bull and increase your year's income.
