No feed is given until the, chick
,are nearly three days old. Watee net,
be given to drink ir taischl1l is takvil
off. The chicks are given the fete!
upon clean boards about eight inches
wide. There must be plenty of boarde
so that there is room, on the boara
for every ()Wok. A board three feet
• long and eight inches wide will give
room enough for fifty chicks on the
start. SO'Says Prof. W. R. Graham,
The cispks for the first few weeks
should be fed about six times daily
at regular intervals. Give the first
feed in the morning as early as the
chicks can see to eat and the last at
night as late as possible. If growing
. chicks in February one feed may be
given at night using artificial light.
Don't Overfeed at the Start.
Many chicks are overfed on the
start. We have adopted the plan:for
the first five or six days in the brood-
er of weighing the feed. An experi-
encedfeeder may not need to weigh
the feed, but the beginner generally
'does better iby weighing it, We al-
low one ounce of the dry mixture for
ev,ery.fiffy chicks et each feed; that
is, no.chicks, for their first fiva days
in the brooder, get more than six
ounces of dry feed to fifty chicks in
one day. The plan followed is to
moisten the first feed with canned
tomatoes, the second with eggs, and
the third with minced liver, and then
begin the series over again. The
above amount will not satsity the
chicks' appetite. They will create a
Freat noise at every feeding time, but
it gives a chance for the chick to ab-
sorb completely the yolk in the bod.e.
After the first period one should
feed two or three times each day all
that the chicks will eat.
We begin giving a drinking vessel
each of water and sour milk, when
the chicks are about 'a week old.
Many give sour milk to drink at th,
start, but we have obtained slightly
better results by not giving the milk
for the first three or four days,
Feed Spebuted and Cracked Grain.
When the chicks pass thesecond
week, sprouted grains may he zed,
also a little cracked grains. The
change should be made gradually
froni tomatoes, eggs and liver over
to sprouted greens, tender green
grass, if available, and a little grain.
If bee, weakness is noted, the tome -
tees and eprouted grains should be
increased or the chicks put out of
doors on clean tender grass.
:• It is, best to rear the chicks on new
ground each year, and never to brood
two lots of .chicks on the sante ground
in any one year. Many chicks are
sent 111. Toe- examination each year
that have troubles due to land infec-
tion,
. 0 It also will be found advantageous
. ,
if feeding ,chicks from trough or
broods, outof doors to move the
boards or troughs a little every feed.
Likewise it must be remembered.
When the chicks are rod iudoors, to
keep the feed boards clean.
Give Them Plenty of Wits
Grit is always in easy aceess of th•
chicks. It is advisable and .aecesear
to add a little osster shell uu 01
fine particles to the ration awe, A
