Tho conservation and improvement of oi11' .native nut treos and the intro- duction nt suitable varieties from fer- eign lands lravc not occupied a pro'.hl- neat place inhorticulturalactivities in North America until just recently, except in, the Southern and Western United States, where a great deal of interest has been 'shown during the last twenty years la this place of tor- ticultu,re, In the northern and eastern Stated and' -in Qanada there is a growing in- terest in this useful but much neglected broach of horticulture. Au example of this commendable move- n:met is seen in the organization and activities of the Northern Nut Grow- ers Association. 'Phis organization was formed in 1909, and is composed of men and women from almost every station in life who are interested in the culture of nut trees and the ex- tension of the use.of nuts es articles of human food. At the suggestion of members of this association, the State of Michigan has undertaken an extensive program of nut tree planting along the state highways, and in other northern states good work has been done to encourage peo- ,p1e:,to plant more and better gut trees. in Ontario Comparatively little has been tried to improve and plant our valuable nut trees, and unless some- thing thing is done to interest the Uublic in this 1novelneut we shall lose a golden opportunity to save for our- selves and posterity the replant of the fine nut trees which formerly grew so abundantly in some parts a.t this Province. Why Nut Trees Should be Planted, Most people who are lutereslecl the welfare of the country realize that trees generally should be piglet• ed in much greater numbers, and some. believe brat it would be desir- able to plant trees that serve a three- fold purpose of food, shelter and beauty. Nirt trees yield a valuable food, provide shelter and beautify r':•! landscape, and thus combine beauty with utility. beige quantities of nuts are imported every year from foreign countries, or which a great deal of money has to be sent out of the country. It is believed that a portion of this demand for nuts could be met by growing a greater number of the. best types of native and introduced species, Where Nut Trees Might be Used to Advantage. Should the prospecttso nut cult`ur- ist not be able to obtain at a moder- ztte ii'gure budded or grafted stock of improved varieties of nuts then. of course, the only thing to do is to grow seedling trees. As previously stated, some of these may produce very good auto. If superior trees are found in any lot grown from seed, or if an exceptional fine na- tive tree is known to exist, such trees are useful as a source of scions for improving trees that are not so de- sirable. It is a fact, though not gen- erally known, that nut trees may be top -grafted like fruit trees. This task is not as easy to accomplish as is the ease in fruit trees, but if pro- per. methods are followed, very good results may be obtained.—Jas. A, Neilson, Hort. Exp.
