have, ecu radically. ,changed, by tru-
ck 'transportation and jobbers who
own, trucks. There is " no doubt that
the- truck has extended markets to
growers. Some recent occurrences
I show. the disadvantages, not so much
of the truck as a means of transpor
tation but jobbers. There are cases
where these men have taken advant,
age- of growers who have not up-to-
date knowledge of markets. A s an
example of this might be noted, an
early carrot grower in Southwestern
Ontario was approached by a buyer
who owns his own truck. This par-
ticular grower did not have - up-to-
date knowledge of the markets and
took what the trucker offered. The
grower, much to his sorrow, later
learned that he sold his carrots at
one-third the market price..
New Cord Disease
Corn crops of Western Ontario,
have a new menace in Stewart's Dis-
ease, which has become prevalent in
Kent and Essex Counties, with a spr-
inkling in Middlesex, Lambton, Nor-
folk and Elgin. Representatives from
these counties met recently to con-
sider the problem. Dr. G. H. Berkley
pathologist, of the Dominion labor-
atory at St. Catharines, and Prof.
Davies of the Dept. of Entomology,
at O.A.C., were present to give in-
formation to the representatives.. It
was pointed out that Stewart's Dis-
ease is a bacterial type, attacking the

Value of Live Stock
Interesting figures on agriculture
compiled from the 1931 census have
just been released. One bulletin sho-
ws the total value of live stock and
bees for Ontario is $172,581,376, as
compared with a .value of $225,005,-
271 for 1921, or a decrease of $62,-
423,895,
62,423,895, or 26.56 per cent. This
decrease is ,partly explained by ade-
ental hay crop they have an import- crease iin numbers of the various
ant place. In yielding and quality of classes of live stock and partly by a
fodder the crop ranks high, and be- decrease in values which has taken

to the land, The seed is the richest decrease in ten years of 4.'72 per et
protein-pii s 1ueing grain that can be
grown in this province. It also yields
a large amount of oil which has a
wide commercial use. The cake or
meal obtained from the processing of
soybeans to extract the oil is an ex-
cellent high protein concentrate wh-
ich can be used with good remits in
haiatacing rations for live stock.

Breaks Batton in Tussle
Whilt in the act of arresting a
prisoner on highway 11 the other
day Traffic Officer Foxton of Goder-
ich was forced to draw his baton.
The accused succeeded in getting his
hands on one end of the weapon and
before the tussle was ended the bat-
on was broken in two, but the ac-
cused was subdued. A zig-zagging
car attracted the officers attention.
The driver was too drunk to give his
name or appear in court.

of a very interesting pamphlet pre-

Field Husbandry, O,A.C., copies of
which are obtainable through your
local agriculural representative. Soy
beans were first tested at O.A.C. in
1893 and distributed for `co-operat-
