BUSY FARMER NEWS
Increasing Yields
The application of a definite sch-
eme of crop rotation is being found
an important factor in reducing feed
costs. The chief advantages of such
a practice are: (1) Maintaining and
improving soil fertility, thus incre-
asing yields; (2) Assisting in weed
control; (3) Assisting in the control
of) insects and crop diseases by
having various crops on fresh soil
each year; and it makes a more even
distribution of labor throughout the
year possible. Increasing the yield
per acre is one of the best ways of
reducing cost of production, and in
this respect crop rotation plays a
real. part.
Why Hens Stop Laying
A flock that has laid heavily dur-
ing the winter will generally slow up
towards the middle of the summer:
when they begin to moult, but when
the egg yield drops rapidly until it
practically ceases without any ap-
parent reason, then suspect vermin.-
Body lice, which remain on the birds
and the red mite which infests the
poultry house during the day, re-
turning to the birds at roosting time
causes heavy losses. C. F. Elford, Do-
minion Poultry Husbandman, recom-
mends for the former dusting the
birds for lice with powder and ap-
plying blue ointment beneath the
wings; and for the red mite he re-
commends a strong solution of Zen-
oleum, applied to the cracks in the
roosts and' nest boxes at regular in-
tervals throughout the summer. Coal
oil applied in similar fashion at inter-
vals is also recommended.
Farm Labor
The following report from the re-
presentative in North Simcoe is rath-
er significant: In spite of dozens of

has not always been easy to secure

A percentage of this floating popu-
'ation is, of course, not well quali-
fied for farm work, but on the other

Chemical Weed Killers
Farmers, gardeners and others are
looking for an easy and effective way
of destroying small patches of peren-
nial wands. The Department of Bot-
any at the O.A.C. has been experi-
menting with chemicals weed killers
for the past four years. The results
obtained from these experiments wo-
uld warrant making the following st-
atements regarding the destruction
of small patches of weeds.
Field Bindweed and Twitch Grass
may be killed by three applications
of Atlacid, Weed Cop or Sodium Chl-
orate. The strength required are one
pound per gallon of water of Atlacid
or Weed Cop per 100 square ft. or 1
pound per gallon of water or Sodium
Chlorate per 400 square feet. The
first application should be given when
the weeds are in full bloom, the sec-
ond three weeks later, and the third
a month later. Blue -weed and Bur-
dock can be killed by orie application
of -Sodium Chlorate at the rate of 8
ounces per gallon of water per 400
square feet and by oneapplication of
Atlacide or Weed Cop at the rate of
1 pound per gallon of water per 100
square ' feet. Poisonivy with the same
solution. Perennial Sow Thistle may
be destroyed by two or three appli-
cations of Atlacide or Weed Cop, the
rate of application being 2 pounds
per gallon of water per 100 sq. feat.
The first application should be given
just as the: thistle commences to
bloom, the second three weeks later,
andif new growth appears, another
application of the same strength sho-
uld be given. Ox -eye Daisy and Wild
Carrot may be destroyedby one ap-
plication of A.tlaeide or Weed Cop at
the rate of 1 pound per gallon . of
water per 100 sq. ft and by one ap-
plication of sodium chlorate at the
rate of 1 pound per gallon o:t water
per 400 sq. feet. The application sho-
nld be made just as these weeds are
coming into flower. Sodium chloride
is one; of our best and cheapest chem-
ical weed killers. Its me, however,
cannot be recommended unreservedly.
