Henry Petty are sorry to hear she
is confined td her home with illness.
The death occurred here Monday
of Frederick Jas. Bengough who pas-
sed away after a lingering illness of
several years. He was the second son
of the Sate James and Mrs. Bengough
and was born in Stanley Township
73 years ago. When a young man
the family moved to Hensall and he
has resided here since. For several
years he had bbeei confined to his
home and gradually growing weaker
till he passed away. He was a Presby
terian in religion and at Liberal i.
politics and highly respected by all
who knew him. Besides his sorrowing
widow he leaves to mourn his loss one
son, Robert of Midland, 1Vlich; and
four sisters, Mrs. Jas. Clarke of
Hensall; Mrs. Win, Anderson and
Miss Katie Bengough of Kippen and
?virsfl Dagg of Killarney, Man. The
funeral took place from his late home
Wednesday afternoon, interment be-
ing in the Hensall UUnion Cemetery.

A homing pigeon mrssing since
last August, which lost its way flying
from Cornwall to Goderich, turned

Carl Eberhardt, a Seaforth boy has
been a student at Faculty of Medie-
ine. University of Toronto, has gradu-
ated with honors. In addition he was
awarded the Gold. Medal of graduat-
ing class and the Chappell prize in
:medicine.
Civic half -holidays on Wednesday
afternoons commence this Wednes-
diay, June 1st, in practically all of
the towns in Huron for the months
of June, July and August, excepting
:the weeks in which a public holiday
occurs.
The Clinton town council is plan-
ting to do some permanent road -
building this year. The idea is to put
permanent surfaces on the principal
streets, spreading the work over a
period of years. ,
At the recent sleeting of the Sea -
forth Public School Board the teach-
ers sent a deputation and asked that
rather than have their salaries cut
fire per cent, as per a previous reso-
lution, they wauld voluntarily return
5 per cent. They stated that this wo-
uld then not affect their superannu-
ation funds.
Last Tuesday evening a couple of
young transients arrived in Goderich
and handed in their bank pass book
applied to Constable M. Kennedy
for lodging for the night. They were
on roller skxates and on inquiry by the
officer the boys gave their names,
both early in the' twenties, both of St.
Catharines, they were making a trip
by roller skates acrosstheDominionto
Vancouver a distance of 2,800 miles,
part of which will be through the Un-
ited States. They are being sent out
by a roller skate company.
Orrin Zapfe, 18 -year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs Harry Zapfe, Brueefield
was the victim of a sad shooting ac-
cident last Sunday evening which
culminated in his death the next day.
The deceased, who was at the home
of his brother, Abraham Zapfe, went

Inspector Ward of the provincial
police, criminal investigation depart-
ment, has been working on the case
Elmer Moore of Ashfield Township
helped himself to 32 gallons of the
county's gasoline. He siphoned it from
a can stored with the county grader
at Carlow. Elmer must pay far the
gas and $10.70 fine and court costs
besides, or serve three months. He
has paid. The wheel marks of his
truck proved the tell-tale..

One of Hayfield's best known and
most highly respected residents pas-
sed away May 19th, in the person of
John T. Gairdner, who has been fit
failing health for several months.
Decease& was the third son of the
late M. and Mrs. James Gairdner
and has, always lived there. For mane
years he was assistant postmaster
and .continued in that positron until
the appointment of Dr. N. W. Wo-
ods as postmaster in 1917. But one
brother survives, Dr. T. Gairdner of
Waco, Neb., who with Mrs. Gaird-
ner, arrived here by auto on May 15,
