Cost of Living Much Reduced in 1931 A dispatch from Ottawa states that the cost of living index numbers with t*err few exceptions fell much faster in 1931 than in 1930, which may be taken as a favorable development, since most authorities consider that Wholesale and retail price IeveIs must come much closer together before a substantial improvement in business can be anticipated, says a report on price movements in 1931, issued. by the Bureau of Statistics. With re- gard to world conditions the report says: A pronounced degree of inst- ability in politicx and financial affa- irs during 1931 prevented much im- provement in the disorganized con- dition of price levels. Elections in Great Britain and Australia, govern- mental crisis in Germany, a. change of government in France, a flare-up of hostilities between Japan and China and lesser happenings, all added un- certainly to affairs of economic con- cern, and hence tended to complicate the restoration of prices to normal relationships. BUSY FARMER NEWS Onion Production Onion growers in Southwestern Ontario enjoyed a fairly successful year in 1931, but they fear that'with the low prices in other lines of farm produce, there may be too maany going into onions. An effort will be made by the co-operative association to limit the acreage this year. It is pointed out that Last year he Eriean marshes were again cultivated and that Considerable acreage was added for that reason. Weather countered - ed the expected increase, however, and the ea -operative was able to place such surplus as was at hand, A mark- et glut is feared this year if the in-; c experienced ;rowers should atternpi onion production. 123 Red Clover Entries What is reportnd to be a world's I t record entry of reel clover seed, ev- h rr exhibited at any exhibition or Mair p was the achievement of the mows e i LOCAL MARKETS MARKETS LET VS SHOW YOU OUR FULL LINE OF GRANITEWARE AT LOWEST PREVAILING PRICES. 4. 4. + -Furniture Greatly Reduced f We are offering our entire Furniture Stock at Greatly Reduced Prices.Furniture Prate have reached lowest level and are sure to advance. Sow Thistle Decreasing At the annual convention of Ken County Wood Inspectors held recen ly at Chatham, several delegate reported sow thistles to be decrease in extent, according to A. K. Marti assistant director, Crops and Market Branch. Prov. Dept. of Agriculture. Thos. Skinner, weed inspector for Caamden Tp., reported a' 30 p.c. de- crease of sow thistle hi one year, he says that this successful battle again- st sow thistle was brought about by the whole -hearted co-operation of the farmers and the weed inspectors. Con trol measures in Kent Counties, on small patches, consist of spraying with chemicals. Where sow thistle has spread extensively, "early ,after harvest cultivation" or summer fal°I- owieig is practised- A short ration, including one specialized crop such as tobacco;., sugar beets, or some oth- er hoed crop, is very effective in checking all' weeds, including 'sows' thistle. , ,. . Care of Baby chicks Proper care and management is es- sential to the successful raising of baby chicks. They should have a gen- erous supply of pure water always available. Drinking vessels harbor germs and often the water will be- ome contaminated and may spread disease through the entire flock. Then there is the danger of some infected chicks in every hatch, danger of ilia - 'hoe in some form or other, loose. owe' and intestinal trouble.
