Foods at Pre -War prices In January Canada's cost of living index stood at 85.6. That is, the mat- erials and services which cost a dol- lar in 1926 can be bought to -day for about 86 cents. This is an average figure for the whole of Canada cov- ering overing such items as food, fuel, rent, clothing and sundries. It does not make allowance for home -owners hav- ing to pay higher taxes, or for the non -reduction of mortgage payments and insurance premiums. Undoubted- ly there are many expenditures which it does not covert The striking feat- ure of it is the pronounced drop in food prices. And that is where the farmer suffers. BUSY. FARMER NEWS Fertilizer Experiments In 1931 under auspices of the Experimental Union 194 co-opertive fertilizer experiments were conducted with farm crops on 776 plots. Cereal grains showed an average increased yield of 10 bushels per acre where fertilizers were used; potatoes, 50 bushels per acre; turnips 3.6 tons per acre; mangels 10.7 tons; silage corn 25 per cent, and meadowsgave an increase of 4,315 pounds of green weight materials. Weed 'Killer Experiments Co-operative trials with chemical weed killers were conducted in 1930 and 1931 by Prof. d. E. Howitt of O. A.C., assisted by W. M. Gammon. They achieved favourable results, get ting a complete kill in some cases with one application, but with stub- born weeds, two applications and sometimes three applications were required. Ox -eye daisy, wild carrot,. blue week and burdock were killed with one application. Poison ivy and chicory were sometimes killed with one application, though occasionally new growth appeared. Twitch grass and field bindweed required three ap- ulications, and at least two appli:cati- ions, were found necessary to eater= .ninate perennial sow thistle. A study if rosirlent,1 .sow thistle. A study of residental erects showed no market damage to crops the following year. Since retrenchment is vital, there is no alternative for the farmer, but to raise a large proportion of his needs on his own Iand. He will grow more of his own vegetables, meats and fuel and many will use alfalfa and sweet clover to put freshenergy into the soil. Alfalfa can be grown over a wide range of 'territory, but sweet clover should be restricted to those areas where there is no danger of getting it mixed with the small seed crops. Seeding down a field of alf- alfa is easily equal to a liberal appli- cation of manure. Also because of its long, thick roots, alfalfa is a splend- id plant for opening up heavy clay and also for adding moisture -retain- ing humus to light slots. Once estab- lished, it will in a few years smooth.- er weeds.. Registering Growers • The Growers' Markets Council at the present time is asking all fruit and vegetabler growers to register their acreage under cultivation and the amount of each crop they prod- uce. Forms are being sent out as widely as possible and any grower who does not receive a copy is asked to write in to the council for one. A. concerted effort is to be made to: pro- vide next year against any repetition of the disastrous marketing season experienced by growers last fall. With this information available for Ontario, as provided for in the regis- tration forms, an accurate estimate of Ontario production can be estim- ate of Ontario production can be made and thus closer working facilit- ies can be arranged between all the fruit and vegetable producing Pro- vinces in.. order that the greatest tios- sif le advantage inlay be taken, el all markets.
