It is the duty of the issuer of al
cheque to affix the stamp. People°
who issue only a few cheques eaca,
year usually forget to put on 'the.
stamp and the receiver has to pay
this tax when he cashes the cheque. -
This is not fair; everyone should pay
the taz onthe cheque he issues. It
is annoying and expensive to the re-
ceiver if he has to pay, and it is sur-
prising what it would amount to in
the course of a year. Bear your
share of the tax.

At Police Court
Two men can be convicted for be-
ing intoxicated and driving the same
car. Alex. McDonald and Wm. Wat-
son, of near Parkhill found this out
at Goderich the other day, when both
were sent to jail for 15 days. Each
thought the other less intoxicated
than the other fellow and insisted on
driving. Both took a whack at it
and each had an accident. Watson
beat it across the fields when he had
his crash, but later he came forward
and made a clean breast of things.
In addition to a jail sentence Mc-
Donald and Watson must each pay al
fine of $33.50. One car was wrecked
and another extensively damaged in
the collisions.
Races. at Goderich
The annual civic holiday horse rac-
es held at Goderich on Monday under
the auspices of the Goderich Trotting
and Pacing Association attracted an
unusually large crowd upwards of
6,000 people being present. The we-
ather being ideal and it was consider-
ed the best races ever held. There
were three stake events on the pro-
gram, each for a purse of $1,000.
The 2.25 Goderich stake had seven
starters, this event went five heats
and was won by Grattan Royal Jr.,
owned by E. Terryberry, of Harley,
and the fastest heat was made in
2.1314. Fiye horses started in the
2.20 Golden Gate stake and required
four heats. Great' Heart wonthe race
and the best time made was 2.1134.
The free for all Blue Water stake
was the feature race of the afternoon.
and was won by Ranula Grattan, Dr
J. B. Whitely's well known pacer Of
Goredich. The time of the first two

ators as well as the judges. After the
second heat the starter Mr. Blair or,
