"An Englishman says: 'I am sorry I cannot oblige you.'" Shaw said, "but a Chinaman says: 'No can,' and ex- presses himself perfectly." Shaw took exception, ironically, to thLeal reference to the "blessed - n the poor, "Until this country becomes determined that it shall never again have a poor man, woman or child in it," he said, "It won't be a country worth .living in." Speaking of libraries and books, Shaw said that it was the British Museum library that hacl made him a Communist. "And I'll live and dive a Communist," he added. "Books," he said, "had been valu- able to him hi the study of speech. `If you made me king of England,' he said, 'I might fall short of the ideal in many ways; but you wouldn't object to me on the ground that my speech was disgraceful. If you made me Archbishop of Canterbury I could get away with the talking part. If you made me Lord Chief Justice I could sentence you to death in a way that Would do honor to the occasion. But the most fluent person in his own language is often helpless if he crosses a frontier. I'm a great man here. But when I get on the other side of 'the Channel I'm less than any porter." Three Mothers Three mothers by your cradle •stand: One mother who has given birth, And one of them is Motherland, And one of them Is Mother Earth; price, all, And two are great and one Is 'small. Your Moihc 1 is strong and dread; Her shie.0 your sure protection makes; She spreads her law above your head, But even while, she gives she takes, Her arm is strong, her word Is true, But she may ask your life of you. From Mother Earth by toil you wring Or feast or crust at her caprice, The shelter for your journeying, Though brief at best will be the lease. And at the end she gives yon bed But cares not where your soul has sped. Mother who has borne your flesh Through good or ill will hold you fast, Will guide you through the world's dark mesh, And so will save your soul at last, Three mothers shall you have in ail, And one is great and two are small. --McLandburgh Wilson. Radio Short -Waves Stop Food Decay Dairyman's Invention Shows Soest, holland.—A discovery ha been made, writee a specie.) corres pondent in The Christian Selenee Monitor, in the fleld of ultra short- wave radio research whereby dedar in foodstuffs is obsoletely ,arrested, according to Robert Pape of Soest, Holland, who has been for many years active in the dairy industry. The invention, put briefly, consists of an apparatus which generates ultra short waves in the red 'ti dig 25 centimeters to 1 meter. The waves thus generated form,- iittaI" about 10 days and within a radio 20 meters from the machine, an elec- tro -magnetic field, in which no or- ganic product can decompose. The size of this electro-lnagnetia field is,. practically speaking, a globe of about 30,000 cubic meters. The preserving action of this field penetrates through everything: stone walls, iron, lead, wood, glass and so forth indoors and outdoors. In any atmosphere or ternper'ature. The cold storage field, which has developed to such a grade of perfec- tion, is said to be highly interested in the new invention. For this new machine, which occupies a space of a few cubic meters and thereby forms a food preserving field of 30,- 000 cubic meters, uses up only as much electricity as an ordinary 200 caudle power electric bulb and the results of this small cttevice are de - Glared to be far bette2'tlian those of a modern equipped cold storage ware- house, with its expensive marlliu- ery, large special buildings and per- _ I sonnet. The invention, which was received at first with incredulity, has lately caused a great deal of interest, na- <• tura) • scientists both from here arid abroad pouring into Mr. Pape's bun- galow here, where he is demonstrat4 ing the machine. The.:eprrespondent of The Christian; Science Monitor has seen food on plates in various parts of the house,. In the garret and in the garden, per-' feetly odorless and undecayed, which -.had been there for months. There were new potatoes of June, 1930, a little bit discolored, but which could. stilleasilyeasily be scraped. There were I eggs, broken on a plate, several ! months 'ago, a little dried, but not a sign of 'decay. Eggs in the shell stored in the house on May 23, 1930, were opened and the yolk was beauti- 1 fu1,1.y yellow and without odor. Reports of experiments by out- sideee. have been published, among thdi' dile of Dr. A, Van Raalte, chief of -the Amsterdam Meat Inspection I Service, on behalf of the Dutch Pat- I ent Council. I From these reports it appeared that the acid percentage of milk wliicit had been kept for a fortnight I. in tie electromagnets, field had not increased; that pears, after a num- ber of months, had maintained all ' the qualities they possessed when placed in the field, and that shrimps, mixed With only 4 per cent. of salt, showed no ammonii: development after a fortnight's exposure. - ^ Autos Now Navigate Deepest Ravers Floating autonio}ailes that run on roads in the ordinary way, but are able when necessary to float across rivers, have been built and tested for use in a traveling exhibition of Brit- ish industries proposed by Capt.
