Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Weida, and
Dorothy, accompanied by Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Turner and Grant cif God-
erich motored on Monday to Landon
and Lucan.
It is understood that the. Govern-
ment is seriously considering a sy-
stem by which the suffering of the
innocent families of men sentenced
to the penitentiary will receive a
small allowance. According to re-
ports from Ottawa, the prisoners'
will receive a small amount of pay
for work done, which will be turned
over to the family.
The funeral of the late Wm. Flynn
was held from the bonne of his son
Geo., of Clandebiye on Friday last,
to St. James church and cemetery
and was largely attended. The ser-
vices was conducted by Rev, Brown
of Lucan assisted. by Rev. D, McTav-
ish and Rev. Harrison. The deceased
who was in his 88th year was a life-
long resident of McGillivray and Bid-
dolph.
The work of the laying of the new
pavement between Centralia and Ex-
eter has not proceedd as rapidly as
the contractor anticipated owing to
a number of unavoidable delays cau-
sed mostly by breakdowns. Consid-
erable over a mile has been laid and
the biggest day. was Tuesday last
when they used. up 4,200 bags of
cement, this being a little over three
car loads.
The case of Albert Wolfe, Credi-

rediton truck driver, who was suing the
Canadian National Railway for $500.
damages for injuries he received in
an accident on April 3, 1930, at Cen-
tralia, which was to have come up in
London last week has been settled
out of court. Wolfe was standing at
the Centralia railway station ready to
load the mail when a truck on the
platform was struck by the train and
crached into the plaintiff.
Fire, saidi to have been caused by
the explosion of an oil engine, the
other day destroyed the large frame
chopping mill in the village of Ethel
owned by Clifford Dunbar. The loss
is placed at $5,000. ThTe blaze st-
arted shortly after 8 o'clock in the
afternoon. Two workmen, A. Dun-
bar and M. Henry, who were starting
the engine, narrowly escaped being
seriously injured.
A new industry in Goderich put its
product for the first time the past
week when the plant of the Goderich
Bottling Works, on Picton st. went
into operation. The plant has been
'under construction for six weeks and
is equipped to manufacture all man-
ner of carbonated drinks. The regis-
tered name of these new soft drinks
is to be "Tweedie's icy Drinks." As
depicited in a scene of a Polar bear
seated on a cake of ice. Not Going to Use Pressure ""
Word from the Department of Ed-
ucation at Toronto has been sent to
tin public school inspectors in the
,,rovinee, and may have some bearing
on school buildings. The circular to
all inspectors comes from Mr. V. K.
Greer; chief inspector of the depart-
ment of - education. It reads: "I have
'•'een asked by the minister of edu-
,ati,,;y to communicate with the in-
pec';ors and to suggest that no undue
pressure towards tit' erection of new
.school buildings be used this year,"

solute silence. No pupil may speak to
another candidate, and presiding offi-
cer at examination and barred from
making any explanation regarding
the probable meaning of any question
or to give any advice as to what qu-
estions should be answered. Several
penalties are provided for violation
of the order.

V. Lewis drove towards Goderich on
the Highway and had to pay a fine
of $10 in., Magistrate Reid's Court
for doing it. And a car driver is sup-
posed to be, able to produce his dri-
ver's permit when`caIled on to do so.
Charles -Kent was unable to do so and
was sentenced to a fine of $50 or 30
days in jail and took the term. There
was also some other offences under
the 'Traffic Act such as driving with
the wrong markers.
Firemen Meet
A busineess meeting of the Ontar-
io West Volunteer Firemen's Associ-
ation was held in the town hall Mit-
ehell, recently. The attendance was
good, despite the unfavorable weath-
er. President C. W. Draper, of Clin-
ton, presided. The main business of
the meeting,was to receive committee
reports and set in motion the mach-
inery for holding the 1931 firemen's
convention and tournament at Clin-
ton 'on June 30th and July 1st. The
annual convention will open at 8.00
p.m. on June 30th with the field day
and tuonuunent the following day.
