Some real nice mild weatl%er.riiitecl
us the first fer days of theaweek and
it looked like spring, as the snow
was going fast, but Tuesday after-
noon another fall of snow took place
and we still have good sleighing. This
was the first signs of the annual Jan-
uary thaw that we are used to hav-
ing, and indications are, that we
will likely not get any 3Yiore thaw
this, week, which will .usher out the
first month of 1931.
A special meeting was called 'at S.
S. No. 11, Hay, on Satu eley after-
noon, to elect a third truce° which
was caused owing to soxne,regular-
ities in the annual meeting. Inspect-
or Beacom was supposed to be pres-
ent, but owing to the condition of the
roads could not get through. So
the business was disposed orf and
Mr. Garnet Patterson was 3the unan-
imous choice of the meeting to be

The annual carnival held on Thurs-;
day evening last, was in every way
a decided success, as the evening
was ideal for the occasion, and a
large crowd gathered to see the fine
array of attires, and inmost of the
contests it was hard to decide on the
v inners of the same. The broom
game was also interesting. and was a
'-ten• fight from start to finish:• - The
a',tendance was good and the spectat-
Drs were well rewarded for conning
out.
Tax Sale of Lands
A county tax sale adjourned from
.;ecenhber lst, 1930, was held on
Ionday last at the Goderich court
house by Gordon Young, county tre-
asurer. 22 parcels of land, involving
$2200 outstanding taxes, were listed,
but there was very little action. 50
acres of pasture land in McKillop
township, on which $92.10 was ow-
ing, was purchased by a neighboring
farmer for the amount of the out-
standing taxes. The original owner
has one year to redeem the propertYi,
with a ten per cent. penalty, the lat-
ter going to the purchaser at the tax
sale. The township of Howick took
over three parcels advertised from
that municipality. Taxes on three
properties in Stephen were paid and
Exeter took over three of the five
advertised within its borders.
A happy little birthday Party was

entertained a number Ofherimmedi-

ing room was decorated in pink and
white, and an appropriate birthday
cake bearing eleven candles occupied
thecentre of the table,,.iOfter the
repast and an hour or so "o1 game-,
singing and music, the party disband-
ed, only wishing the time could be
longer. Mae was t'.:e recdp'en.y of r

Considerable difficulty was experienc-
ed in opening up the bigliway to
London, as on Monday Who' plows
were used up before they got -through
and had to be taken back to the city
for repairs. It involves a great deal
of expenditure to keep these roade
open, and we often wonderif:' really
is money wisely spent, as the raod
runs almost paralell with the railway
and the trains must be kept open.
The young people of the 14th con.
and Sauble Line, gathered at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Stelck or.

was spent in music, games and dant.

presented him with numerous and
useful gifts. And as lunch was serv-

which was ;beautifully decorate, then
gave a short address expressing his
gratitude for the gifts he receiver.:.

The annual . meeting of the Zurich
Agricultural Society was held in the
Town Hall Zurich, on Wednesday.
afternoon, January 21st, this being
the 66th meeting, so the society is
not at all in its infancy, and was' fair-
ly well attended considering the rath-
er inclement weather. The Treasur-
er's and Auditors' reports were re-
ceived and adopted. The Society is
in a line and healthy niondition, as
the Treasury has the snug balance on
hand of $122.00, which is some $50,
more than a year ago, regardless that
the amount of prize money paid out
exceeded that of 1929. In fact the
society had a most splendid year in
every respect. The Fair dates for
1931 are Sept, 28th and 29th.. It
was again decided to enter in the Com
bincd Field Crop and Threshed grain
competition provided if twelve en-
tries can be secured. Departmental
Judges will again be engaged, and no
