COUNTY NEWS
The finance committee of the Un-
ited Church, Grand Bend, held their
meeting to wind up the year. After
paying off the interest and expenses
they paid off $2204. on the new ch.
urch which is quite commendable for
this year of so -called hard times.
The danger which attends children
sleigh -:riding on hills over which ve-
hicular trafl'c passes was emphasized
the other day on Saltford hill, betwe-
en the railway and the Maitland river
bridges, when a 12 -year-old boy had
a miraculous escape from serious in
jury, or death.. A truck driven by
en Peterborough, his parents, who are
H. 1:1:il1 passed over the boy, who was
on his sleigh, but fortunately the
wheels missed him and he escaped
with severe bruises to his shoulders,
and back. The boy's name is Steph-
Polish, reside at Saltford.
The Brucefiel.d Library Board has
purchased over 50 new books which
will be ready for circulation in Jan-
uary.
Jas. Mah.afy died at his hgome in
Clinton, in his 86th year. He was
born in the township of Darlington,
and when a small boy his parents
settled on a bush farm in Hibbert,
his wife ,pre -deceased hien by several
years.
Charles Deitz, of MclCillop, has
moved the boiler home which he
purchased from the Town of Sea -
forth, and intends to use it for a,
culvert over one of the municipla
drains that runs through his farm.
Frank Donelly, B.A. barrister and
solicitor, has opened on office in the
former Royal. Bank building, North
St., Goderich for the practice of his
profession. He was practicing- in
Toronto for several years. for a time
in partnership with J. Garvey, of a
well-known Ashfield family.
Dr. Charles Jase, for 22 years a
veterinary surgeon, of Kirkton, died
suddenly. He had been ill for a-
bout two web, but his condition was
not believed Serious; -until stricken
with a heart attack His _witlow..e d,

Dr. Garnet of Xirkton survive.
Mrs. Henry Warren, an esteemed
resident of Clinton, passed- away on
Sunday last in her S4th year. Mrs.
Warren had been in failing health
since August. Before that time she
had been able to get about to some
extent, and greatly enjoyed her fri-
ends.
Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Trewartha, of
Clinton, celebrated their anniversary
on New Year's Eve. by entertaining
a number of friends and relatives to
dinner at their home. They were
married on Dec. 27, 1905, the offc-
iating clergyman being the Iate Rev.
5. Hamilton of the Leeburn Presby-
terian church. Mr. Trewartha was
a teacher, being at the time of his
nearreage ism .charge, of H"olrnesvif a
school.

A 'serious occident occurred one

in a dishy of viserliuie on the kitchen
table, when their !mother attempted
to hang a lighted lamp above the
table and the fumes from the gasoline
took fire. The hands and arms of
the two girls were severely burned
and ,Airs. Gealtes, who to prevent a
lire in the ionise picked up the dish
of gasoline and threw it outside, also •
was badly 'burned.
