At 1.30 a n. fire was scan coming through the roof and when the door was forced` open the whole interior was found to be ablaze. Nothing was saved from the store. Mr. Bernie, the owner of the store, purchased the business 2 ire years ago, following the death of W. G. Neal. The residence at the rear of the store was unoccupied. Value of the stock destroyed was estimated at $20,000, which was partly covered by insurance. The origin of. the fire is a mystery. The International Labor Review fends that in buying food it takes $1.29 in Canada to -go as far as $1.00 does in Britian; while food, fuel, light and _soap combined, the Canadian must spend $1.30 to equal the Brit- on's dollar. But on the other hand, Canadian wages are so high that their purchasing power, .in .terms 'of' food is 57 per cent, in adviince . Of British wages' purchasing power: and in purchasing food, fuel, light anew soap 55 per cent in advance of the British. These are of course everag- :d figures from representative groups of towns and not offered as stand- ards of comparison. But they do in- dicate superior position which Cana- da enjoys.• The decision of Henry Ford to pay "real wages" in his twenty Europ- ean factories and assembly plants equal to those paid in his American Omits is causing no little stir on d--a "The Continent" where radicals are icing the fact as an argument in favor of a general raise in wages. Economists are replying that any ria - :ion that pate up its scale of wages it this time is committing industrial suicide. Many business rnon in Can- uda are of the opinion that wages vill have to be forced down on this rrie of the Atlantic if the usual pro- s sses of trade are to continue.
