Fowl Suppers
(Fergus News -Record)
How does it happen that so many
church anniversaries "happen" to cic-
cur in October and November, at tire
very season of the year when fowl
suppers are most easily arranged?
Thinking not only of our rural neigh_
borhood, but also of the numerous it-
ems appearing in our exchanges these •
weeks, we often wonder. Another
problem also present's itself. So many'
of the writers speak of "successful
fowl supper" What makes a fowl sup-
per .a success? Is it when the young
and eligible cockrels of the district'
are wiped out? Is it when those whit.
have paid their 50c or 75c per head
have eaten until they can eat no
more? Is it when the jokes of the I
minister and. the amateur plays and
recitations have brought forth laugh-
ter, even when laughter is painful?
Or is it when, there is a great awak-
ening of spiritual interest in the chur-
ch as a result of enthusiastic services
held on the anniversary?
BUSY FARMER NEWS
Winter Feeding Problem .
A scarcity of both corn silage and Barley
roots, the two home-grown sources e Molar
succulence, will complicate the feed-
ing situation this winter in Western
Ontario at least. Corn is a short crop
though of good quality, and roots
less than half a crop. Nor is hay very
plentiful. There is an abundance of
straw of which much will be fed.The
large use of straw presents a dual fe-
eding problem. Succulence and pro-
teins will have to be supplied in lar-
ger measures than in previous years.
Such rich meals at oilcake, cotton
seed and gluten will provide the pro-
tein, although in the case of cotton
seed care must be exercised because
it is constipating. Where there is sil-
age it should be mixed with cut straw
24 hours in advance of feeding in or
der to make it go farther.

Recent rains have modified the say_
erity of the water shortage situation,
which had become acute in many co-
unties, according to reports a large
percentage of the wells and streams
had dried up and stockmen particu-
larly were alarmed. Fall work is
reported in good shape and plowing
in all counties practically completed.
In Lambton farm stock auction sales
are bringing good prices, while in
Lanark there if; a big demand for
stockers and hogs with light supply.
Farmers in Sinicoe are marketing
their grains by feeding it to hogs and
beer cattle.
Canadian Seed in Demand
A sharp demand for registered
rades of Canadian grown seed of
roots and vegetables is indicated, par-
ticularly in Ontario. VegetaNq
grQ-
ver, gardeners and farmers find that
Ale extra cost of high quality seed is
-dight in proportion to its actual sup-
-L,riority. Two factors make for qual-
ity ix seed grown in Canada. These
are the inherent advantage of care-
ful selection in foundation seed stock
and the important fact that seed pro-
duced in Canada is acclimated, giving
maximum assurance of production
results.

Winter Care of Machinery
Winter care of machinery is of de-
cided ecornic importance and this can
not be affected without a shed for
shelter. Weathering caused by snow
coverings and continual freezing and
thawing and wet periods in fall and
spring brings rapid decay of wooden
parts, and causes metal parts and be-
arings to rust. This weakens the im-
plements and rusty, stiff bearings are
often a source of costly breakages.
Not only will the period of usefulness
be lengthened by housing the mach-
inery during the long idle period, but
at the. time of storing the rend and
thick grease can be removed, bear-
ings oiled, sharesand mould boards
greased, and lists made of repair pts.
necessary- to put the machinery in
shape for the following spring. The
farmer who has his machinery housed
has a much better opportunity to re-
pair the mathines during the winter
months than has the farmer who has
his machines buried in the snow.
hood Demand For Apples
The lifting of the British embargo
against the lower grades of United
States apples on Nov. 15, has made
no difference in prices generally thr.,
oughout the British Isles, according
to Andrew Fultoin, overseas repres-
entative of the Ontario Fruit Grow-
ers' Association. As a matter of fact,
he says that there is a keener demand
for both dessert and cooking; apples
with a marked tendency, for higher
values. Thera is a good &wand for
better quality red apples with every
indication that this, situation will con-
tinue. It is his opinion that Ontario
shippers can export with consider-
able confidence in receiving satisfaet-
ory prices, providing the apples are
attractive. Shipperare urged to
paliatitZ, mark their barrels "Canadlz1
Apples" which will cause less con.
