Stricken with appendicitis Lloyd
Passmore, of this village; was taken
to the Seaforth Hospital and operat-
ed upon. His condition is reported as
well as can be expected.
Struck by lightning the barn on the
farm of alva Way, located two miles
northeast of 11ensall, on Saturday
.N. -e., was destroyed by fire on;Sunday
morning early along with the season's
crops. The structure was burned to
the ground.

been carrying on the business for sev-
eral years and who, on account of in
health, was advised by his doctor to
take a complete rest for some months

more than half a century died at his.
home on Sunday, in the person , of
Robert Bonthron, in his 87th year.
Born in Scotland, he came to Can-
ada with his parents when •eight ye-
ars old, being a native of Buckhaven,
Fifeshire. He completed his educat-
ion at Upper Canada College and_lat.

ars at what was then known as Tay-

enjoyed bowling. He also was widely
known for his ability as a quoit pit-
cher. For a number of years he was
clerk of the Village Council. In p
tics, a staunch reformer, in religion
a lifelong presbyterian. A number
of years ago deceased, who played
the violin exceptionally well, took
part in many concerts in the histrict.
He is survived by his. widow, form- I
erly Maria White; three sons, Win.
Bonthron, Detroit; James W., mer-
chant of Hensall, and Fred, formerly,
of New York, who is now living, re-
tired in. Hensall. Four daughters: 1
Mrs. J. McMartin, Barrie; 'Mrs. S.
Vair, Toronto; Mrs, L. Simpson, De-
troit, and Mrs. T. C. Joynt, Hensall,
Two sisters, Mrs.. A. Ross and M.rs:.
R. H. Collins, both. of Kitchener. The
funeral was held. -privately on Tues-
day afternoon to the Hensall ceret-
ery for internment.

A narrow escape from death by.:

Earl Whiting, of Usbarne, had the
misfortune to meet with a. second. bad
accident when his left hand and arm.
were badly burned when some gaso-
line caught fire while he was attempt-
ing to refill a tractor. The. tractor
was running at the .time and some
gas fell on the exhaust pipe and ig-
nited. He was earring his left hand
in a bandage owing to an accident a
few days previous when his fingers
were injured in a windmill. He took
his hat aid tried to subdue the flames
when the bandage on his hand caught
fire and his arm was badly burned to
the elbow.
By a decisivemajority the ratepay-
ers of Goderich on Monday last de-
cided to extend for another ten ye-
ars -the fixed taxation of $70.,000 of
the Western Canada Flour Mills Ltd.
The• total vote of 1073 is a large one
for a money by-law and was divided
851) for and 214 against, the two-
thirds majority necessary being 140.
