planting purposes throughout th
province. One block of pine in th

The local Trustee Board of Zurich
Public School have received the res-
ignation of the principal of the con-
tinuation class Mr. A. Pigeon, and
e tadvertisin- for a new principal.
Mr. Pigeon had charge. of this depart-

gave very good satisfaction, as he at

account of himself with his pupils.

section, and a very small amount of
rain, fell, which was soon licked up
again by the hot dry sun. Rain is
badly needed for the beans and later
crops, .also the potatoes, which are
rather small in most cases, would re-
quire considerable rain to make them
look like a crop. Here's hoping!

Labor Cost Important.
It is said tliat.the cost of feed is
to the most important item in the cost
of producing milk. It will amount to
about one-half of the total coat. La-
bor, however, is a strong second.
According to numerous sur'-••-:• •i
this continent, the average cost of
labor involved in the production or
100 pounds of milk will constitute
about 25c/ of the selling price. The
same survey indicates that the labor
per cow ranger from 150 to 170 hrs.
The larger- the herd the less labor
per cow is a very general rule.
The Dairy Hers? in August
August is the hardest month of the.
year for the dairy herds. "If milk pro
duction can bo maintained during
this month little concern need be
felt about maintenance of the milk
flow during the balance of the year"
declares one authority who has dev-
eloped several high record cows. Formeeting difficulty. of this trying mon-
th. he suggests: Control of flies, pro-
tection from the hot sun,. ample sup-
ply of cool water, and the use of a
succulent feed to supplement dried -
out Pastureage. The first of these
three measures can be best secured
by the use of a suitable spray. The
second may be provided by shade
trees in the pasture under which the
cows may feed and rest out of the
sun. Another method is to stable the
cows during the clay and let them
pasture at night. Shadeing and scr-
eening the windows provides added
coolness in the barn and also helps to
control the flies For the t♦hird, a
Isucculent roughage may be lPY as n
supplement to pgsturage. Ensilage•
or Cors: give vers good results.

'County, but this year scarcely a field
i of alsike is to be seen. It was too
i dry to get a catch last year. Red
e ;lover has also suffered. The grow-
ing oi.small seeds is important and
there are no less than 11 seed clean-
( ing pleas within the county. Blue-
Igrass, of which 1,000,000 pounds we-
re produced last year, is mostly ex-
ported. it conies with the alsike or
the year following and may yield a-
round 200 lbs. to the acre.
Better Bull'Area
At the close of last year the fol-
lowing counties had, by by-law of the
county council, proclaimed themselv-
es better 13u11 Areas: Bruce, Perth,
ft ford, Wellington and Peel. In
order that this bylaw may be passed
it is at least necessary that 80% of
the bulls maintained within the coun-
ty are purebreds. The work has be-
en slow but the events accruing ars,
such that public sentiment is 'behind
the movement.
Sow Thistle Spreading
That the perennial sow thistle, re-
cognized as the world's worst weed,
is sperading at an alarming rate in
some parts of Ontario is the state-
ment of A. R. G. Smith of New
Hamburg, who as district weed in-
spector for Western Ontario, advises
farmers to be on their guard. Mr.
Smith reports that many fields sown
to spring grain in districts where the
weed was hitherto comparatively un-
known, are ab .present a source of
worry to farmers. He points out:
euuld alisrrll. Otos 1sluua.xed n le„
comes to bloom it will mature its
seed:; unless the plant .is burned.
Farmers should' n tothresh their (rain.
outside because the blooms will spr-
ead over adjoining areas, each seed
having a' eparachut bloom' which will
carry fermiles and stay up in the
air for many hours." He advises
farmers to cultivate gang Plow or
plow immediately after harvest on
fields that are not seeded down. It
is important to keep sow thistle from
blooming or going to seed wherever
possible. More than 850 weed insp-
ectors are now at wort: in Ontario
and every :farmer . should make a
point to :report the ,.presence of this
weed to the.n.earest representativt,
