Ontario Has Surplus The Province of Ontario reports a surplus of $237,000 for the fiscal year, ending October 31st, 1928, it was announced by Hon. J. D. Mon- teith, provincial treasurer, in his cus- tomary pre -sessional statement. He announced that the surplus remained after full provisions had been made for discount of bonds and paying off $3,171,579 of the provincial debt un- der the -40 year retirement plan, and in spite of the fact that succession duties;; one of the treasury's great- est sources of income; fell approxi- mately $4,800.000 below the returns for last year. Lipuor control_ board rveneue is shown as $225,000 over the budget estimates of last session. Profit en the actual sale of liquor was derived to the extent of $7,225- 000. This amount is $4,425,000 gre- ater than that of 1927, when the new act operated for only five months. Liquor permits 'contributed $893,390 to the treasury, With fines imposed sed under the 'new law, the treasury `•- ned altogether approximately $8,225- 000 from operation of the Ontario Liquor Control Act. Ordinary rev- enue for the year was $58,455.000 and ordinary expenditures $58,192,- 000. In both cases the treasurer re- ports that expectations were exceed- ed. In 1927 ordinary revenue 'mo- unted to $56,296,000 and ordinary expenditure to $55,947;000. 3 6094060660061114 Ia•unN•••a• Is • • • • The Best Time • TO PLAN YOUR SUMMER'S PROGRAM OF WORK, REPAIRS • • • AND IMPROVEMENTS • • • LET US SHOW YOU THE BEST KINDS OF FENCING FOR THE FIELD, OR THE HOME LAWN FENCES. For ,some time/ now this programme has been carried on with increasing interest on the part of landowners until last year nearly 5,000 persons accepted trees frons. the Government. With the ste- ady increase in applications the num- ber of trees has necessarily increased until this year there are ] 4,000,000 trees available for the various refor- estation projects being -carried on by the Forestry Branch, In reminding your readers 'of this work it should be made clear that such trees are sent out for the two purposes ment- ioned above and are not intended for decorative work such as lawns and hedge planting or for planting along fences. Each resident of the Prov- ince can get 4,000 trees each year by (laying the express from the nearest Government nursery which are situ- ated in Norfolk, Simcoe, Durham, Prince Edward and Grenville count- i.es. Or, if a person prefers to do so he may •call and get the trees at the nursery. In some cases risen are pl- anting more than the free aliotment eacii year and for such work addit- ional quantities are supplied at $4.00 per thousand. 'It may be of interest to you and your readers to know that last year 131 people in your county received trees from us, who, all told, planted 86,178 trees. Itis to be hoped that even more residents of your county will' this year become in- terested in this pleasant and profit- able work.
