St. Valentine's Day comes on Thurs-
day Feb. l.4th.
Miss Alberta Finlay of Blake sp-
ent a few days with Mrs. Norman
Gascho of town.
Mrs. Morley Witmer of Detroit,
spent Sunday at the home of her par-
ents Mr. and Mrs. J. Decher, Jr.
Somebody has suggested that the
little motto on the motor cars de-
claring the driver's devotion to "care
and courtesy” should be printed on
both sides.
Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Buchanan of
Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Cox of Sask-
atoon, were recent visitors at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Daters.
A very interesting game of hockey
was played on Monday evening last,
on the local ring when the stalwart
puck chasers from Hensall carne out
and crossed sticks with the locals for
the tie score of 3--3.
Rev. Father Marchand, of Strat-
ford has been appointed priest -of St.
Peter's R. C. Church Drysdale, to suc-
ceed the late Rev. Father J. E. Ger-
ard. Father Marchand has already
taken up the work.
The annual meeting of the subscr-
ibers of Hay Municipal Telephone
System was held in the Town Hall,
Zurich,.on Saturday last, with a fair-
ly representation of the subscribers
present. The Auditors' Report ;:1,ows
that the system is in a healthy condi-
tion financially, with a cash balance
on hand of $1,438.15 and surplus as-
sets of $26,841,49. At the end of
last year 708 subscribers were con-
nected with the system, a gain of 14
over the previews year,

Ontario's Big Highway Bill
In the past three years $78,000,-
000 has been spent on the mainten-
ance and improvement ,of roads in
the province of Ontario by the Pro-
vincial Government Department of
Highways. Including contributions
irom the various municipalities con-
cerned in 1928 a total of $30,000,-
000 was spent, $26,500,000 in 1927
and $21,500,000 in 3926. For 1929
,an extensions is planned for Ontario
Autontbbile .license fees and the 'tax
on gasoline mei'-ed a total in 1928 of
$11,500,000 for the Ontario Govern-
ment,

HURON AND ERIE
The Huron and Erie Mortgage Cor-
poration, which has enteren. its 66th
year. The financial statement is qu-
ite in keeping with the corporation's
reputation for interesting reports.
Savings deposits, which a year ago
totaled $9,851,000, advanced to $10,-
761,000, a gain of $910,000. An even
greater increase occured in the cor-
poration's Canadian debenture dep-
artthent, the figures at the close of
1.9213. being $22,824,000, compared to
$21,776,000 a year ago, a difference
of $1,048,000. The substantial sum

the year's profit to the reserve fund,
which now stands at $2,600,000.
During the past five years $950,000
has been added to the corporation's
reserve. Total assets advanced from
$42,014,000 to $43,222,000, a gain
of $1,208,000. Net profits for the
year were $589,000, as against $'577-
000 for the preceding year. ,After
paying dividends to shareholders, tr-
ansferring $1.00,000 to reserve fund,.
and writing off $15,000 on its of Ice'
buildings, $66,400 is carried forward
in Profit and loss account. First mor-
tgages with accrued interest totaled''
$35,970,000.• Real estate held fort-
sale and acquired by the Huron &
Erie at the time 'of the • purchase of '
the Hamilton Provident and Loan
Corporation amounts to $42,800, or
$25;000 less than a year ago. Again,
for. the' 21st consecutive year the cor-
poration was able to dispose of every.
dollar's worth of real estate that
came into its hands during the year.
A strong liquid position: is maintain-
ed as usual, immediately marketable
bonds and otheithigh grade securities
together with cash on hand and in
banks. in Canada and United. Siates,
and Great Britain, totaled over ,$4,=
628,000.
