Hospital for Sick Children
07 College St.; Toronto 2, Ont.
I December, 1927. •
Dear Mr. Editor:— '
Most or your readers are well
aware of the wonderful service
which the Hospital for Sick Chil-
dren in Toronto is enabled to per•
form through the generosity of its
friends. During the Christmas
season the Hospital appropriately,
makes its annual appeal for the
funds necessary to carry on the
work throughout the new year..
Now is the time to give tangible ex-
pression to the feeling of good -will
which "The Sick Bids" Hospita1—
as it is familiarly called—has won
for itself in every part of this;
provfnee.
The magnitude of the Hospital's
task continually enlarges. In its
little blue cots there are always
nearer three hundred than two
hundred youngsters being tenderly,
ushered back to .health and strength.
For every patient a -•dollar a day,
must be secured through voluntary
contributions which adds• up to at
least $100,600 for each year Of the
hospital's ministry..
Its service, however, is not con-,
tined to its own four wails. Note
these arresting facts. ° The infant
•'mortality rate in Ontario is 78,6,
while in Quebec it is 142. In our
towns and cities the loss of infant.
lite is less than half .what it is in
the sister province. Now, for On.;
tario's priceless advantage, one out
standing reason is the maintenance,
by public benevolence of a World-'
famous, provincial institution dedi
cited to the care of the onrcominh
generation. An entire department
of the Hospital for Sick Children is
devoted to the Care of babies 'under
one year df age. Here every aid
which medical science can devise is
extended to help the thly patients
through the first hard round in
:their struggle for existence.
Familiarity with,, the methods
here employed is an invaluable
asset to doctors and nurses enlist-,
ing for service rte the homes' of the
province. Titus is the childhood of..
even the most remote e0inniunity,
within the compass of the 'wide-;
spread ministration of the Hospital
for Sick Children benefitted. It is
indeed s, work for humanity which
deserves cordial remembrance at
'Christmas tilde,
i' aithfully,, yours,
I 'tVING . ]2. rtol3>nTsoNv,

Zoo Monkeys Fail
To Get Excited
Show No Reaction to Seeing
Gorilla on Screen
New York -The monkeys up in
Central Park Zoo do not care what
their race does on the screen.
To learn whether monkeys recog-
niezd their likenesses on the screen a
new motion picture "The Gorilla,"
was presented in the monkey -house
recently.
Several scientists were to watch the
reaction of the living monkeys in
their cages when they saw the huge
gorilla on the screen. It was explain-
ed that if some of the more powerful
living monkeys got excited they might
tear down the bars of their cages and
do other acts of violence, Guards wore
posted.
The total reaction of the monkeys
at seeing the picture was:
One sat at the top of its cage watch-
ing a, woman's red hat.
Four others went to sleep.
One sat in the corner of Its cel]—
and it was the type supposed to go
mad—munching at some fruit and
gazing Idly at a large rat.
The only excitement shown was
when the lights were turned on. Then
the monkeys whipped their trapezes
and beat on the bar violently..

Taxis in Panama Have Flat
Rate
In Balboa and Panama City, ou the
Isthmus of Panama, one may ride in
a taxi for five minutes or an hour, and
pay the same fare -26' cents a person.
To one accustomed to New York cabs
with their clicking, leaping meters,
this comes as something of a shock.
Despite the cheapness of their tariffs,
however, these taxis of Panama are
very comfortable. '
The drivers, as ao rule Spanish,
.Panamanian or negroes, are always
very conrteolls, Some of thorn have
a scant knowledge of ,English, but all
seem to be able to say "25, cents" or
"two bits." They must of necessity
be excellent drivers, for both Panama
City and Balhba leave narrow streets
which ratable in all directions.
