FRIDAY, AUGUST 2, 1901.
With this issue the HERALD en-
ters on its second year of publica-
tion. The venture, the first that
has ?ver been made in this good
old village has proved to be a suc-
cess beyond expectations. Our list
of subscription todav is nearly
double what it was estimated it
would be and from present indica-
tions will reach 800 by the end of
this year. Much credit is due our
correspondents for making the
HERALD the popular home paper
and we trust their continued efforts
and influence will assist in main-
taining the position the Herald has
taken in the newspaper field of this
County. ._
The Canadian Pacific Railway has
THE ZURICH FIERALO
The citizens of our oaunty town
are at last waking up and are agi-
tating for better railway communi-
cation. The project is a radial rail-
way for the County, taking in
Luoknow, 'Wilhghanl, Brussels,
Varna, Bayfield and Goderioh, with
a branch north to Blyth and a
South branch presumably along or.
near the Goshen line, through
Zurich, Dashwood and Crediton, to.
a point on the Grand trunk, possib-
ly Ailsa Craig. ° Rapid. transit is
becoming a necessity in these days
of hustle, and the district that is
favored with it has a distinct ad.
vantage over the rest of the ' Coun-
try. Application for .a charter is
being made, and as soon as that is
secured, the line will be surveyed
and the work of building the road
begun.
It appears, from reporta that have
been received, to be very doubtful
that eastern Canada will be able to
supply anything like the 20;000 men
necessary to harvest the wheat crop
of the Northwest, While itis prob-
able that the harvest excursions
which the Canadian Pacific Railway
are running will be largely patron-
ized, owing to the extra efforts that
are being made to secure the neces-
sary harvest hands. it would not be
at all surprising if the number fell
far short of 20,000. The demand
for farm laborers in Ontario at the
present time is exceptionally brisk,
and high wages are being paid for
every plan who will consent to
work, while the railway .construe.
tion development work going on
around the Soo and in New Ontario
has pretty •well drained what sur-
plus Taber there was -in this.
