MEDICAL SCEINCE,ADVANCE.
It is not More than half • a. Cen-
tury ago that physicians considered
a surgical operation with ite risk,
expense and pain as the only cure'
for piles. Today it is only the out
of elate doctors that -think of such
treatment. It is cruel and extrava-
gent to operate for a djaease which
is far more certainly Cured by the
application of Dr. Chase's Oint-
ment. You may be skeptical, but
for proof you are referred to tens
of thousands of eases that have
been cured by this famous prepara-
tion. .

Brantford, July 10.—A• meeting
of the committee appointed to . pro-
vide a suitable exhibit of Ontario
butter and cheese at the Pan Ameri-
can, in competition with all Ameri-
ca, was held to -day at • the Secre-
tary's office, Brantford, at which
were present Mr. J. M. Faget of
Canboro'. Chairman ; Mr. H. Eagle
of Attercliffe Station, and Mr. Geo,
Mately, Secretary. The secretary
submitted a report which he had
received from the Superintendent
of the dairy division of the Pan-
American of the judging of the
cheese. The showing is a remark -
'able one. Not only does Ontario
sweep the board with its export
cheese, being the only classes in
which it exhibited, but the exports
are all of such high excellence of
quality that each and every one
of the fifty-seven exhibits has been
awarded a premium. The com-
mittee has decided to make an ex-
hibit.of August cheese at the Sep-
tember competition.
Attempt at Suicide.
Exeter.—Joseph Bawden, an old
resident of town, made an attempt
to end his life this morning (Thurs-
day) by first taking strychnine and
then cutting his throat with a
knife. Ho has been in a rather
despondent mood for some time
and has on different occasions
threatened to take his life, but it
was never thought he would carry
it into effect. However, he got up
early this morning and after doing
his chores walked to William street
where he swallowed two fair sized
doses of poison. He then walked
to the rear of Mr. W. G. Bissett's
livery barn and threw himself down
on some hay in one of the out
buildings. The deadly drug not
operating as readily as he desired
mud fearing, as he afterwards ex-
pressed, that it would not have the
desired effect he took out his knife
and cut a large gash in his throat
to expedite his purpose. Both,
however, have failed and he is now
on a fair way to recovery, although
in a very weakened.condition. The
affair is a sad one.
