Kaffirs, armed after their own fash-

adds that while the uatives were,
employed as border guards during
the previoos Boer invasion of the
Herschel district they conducted
themselves in a manner worthy of
all praise. Commandant Fouche must
therefore take the consequence.
Details of the raid into the Tranks-

the small town of Rhodes, attacked
Maclear, the seat of a magistracy,
fifty miles east of 13arkly East. The
towu lies in a basin surrounded by
high ground, which the small garri-
son occupied. Fighting vrent on for
three days, and the enemy had sev-

Colonel Dalgety, cornmeal of the
Cape Mounted Rifles, has now en-
tered Maclear. The Boers have left
the district, and are now wander-
ing in the neighborhood.

whereupon the Boers surrendered
without firing a, shot. Two helio-
