A Large Grin.
A large modern gun passed
through Owen Sound on Saturday.
and was taken west on the 5. S.
Manitoba. It was shipped from
the Govern mnnt arsenal at Wool-
wich. and addressed to the naval
storekeeper at Esquimalt, B. C.,
the station for the North Pacific'
squadron. The gun was about
twenty-five feet long, with five
inch bore, and weighed eighteen
hundred pounds. On the breach
easingwere the words '•Por Re-
serve.'' The gun is suniiar to the
long Tome used by the mariners in
the defence of Ladysmith. The
porters had considerable difficulty
loading the large weapon on. the
steamer, and one of thenlln had his
foot crushed when letting it down
to the deck.—Owen Sound Times.

month, the weather has been ex-
tremely hot, and the absence of
ram makes the heat much more
oppressive.
The citizens of our sister village,
Hensall celebrated Wednesday as
their civic holiday. A large
nunnber attended the Masonic ex-
cursion to Brantford and some
spent the day at the lake shore.
A very pleasant singing meeting
was held. at Menno Bechler's on
Sunday evening last, The boys
and girls turned out in good num-
bers and had an enjoyable time.
After lunch, all went hone well
pleased,
Mr. Major Johnson and hitt two
neices, the Misses Johnson, of
Zurich were guests of Councillor
Johnson from Saturday until
Monday afternoon. There are
two brothers Johnson in Zurich,
and they have been partners in
business for close upon thirty
years, the greater part of that
time in the pretty village in
whieh they at present reside.

Mr. John McAllister, a respeetedi

after an illness of some months.
He was about 78 years of age and

Mr. Beaupre, the elder, states.;

came too heavy for a horse. and
during the last few years has look-
, ed after cattle from the seat of a
dogcart. Young Beaupre is strong,
healthy, and well proportioned,and
is certainly one of the largest men
