CULTIVATION OP AMER IN
MEXICO.
A very large amount of Pacific
coast capital has, within the past
few years, been invested in the
rubber plantations of the southern
Mexican States. In years gone by
the rubber industry of Mexioo was
of considerable itnportaneo, but the
improvident native method of har-
vesting was fatal to the industry,
aend the large returns dwindled us
the number to trees decreased; tin -
til the export of native rubber ceas-
ed to be of much account. • The
States of Tobacco and Chiapae, ad-
joining the isthmain region of
Tehuantepec. have been the former
sources of rubber supply. In soil,
temperature, rainfall and other
general conditions, these States
possessed ideal qualificution•s for
the cultivation of the tree. The
soil is the accumulation of long
centuries of • tropical decay, while
the annual rainfall ranges from
150 inches and upward.. The tem-
perature required, hot and humid,
is here found, while the dense
shade which the rubber tree is said
to crave is afforded by the untouch- 1
ed. forests which abound in the - I
tended valleys of the Watercourses!

The Pan-American Exhibition at
Buffalo, is now open to visitors,
though the official opening will not
take place until the twentieth inst.
In the meantime, the special rail-
way rates have commenced, and no
less than twenty trains a day each
way will bo running between Buf-
falo and Toronto. during the season.
In solo -respects this exhibiten will
surpass that at Chicago in 1893
especially in respect to electric in-
ventions. All the machinery in
the buildings will be ru1l by elce-
trio motors, with poor -furnishod
from Niagara balls. The buildings
are claimed to be finer than.
at Chicago.
