It is estimated that during the

killed in Ontario, a reeler(' which
shows that the present regulations
are none too exacting. There Were

Company carried 127 deer weighing
in all 15,000 pounds, and 16 moose.

English resentment over the gross
caricatures of the Queen printeby

early period of the Boer war has

France and Great Britain would
never be broken.
The revenue earned by the Pro-
Vinee in the year just closed from
fisheries branch, consisting of
license fees, amount to about $36,-
000, or nearly $6,000 . more thanin
1899 and $1,000 more than was esti-
mated at the beginning of the year.
The difference is partially account-
ed for by the energy of the over-
seers employed by the department
who left no tone unturned to secure
per observance of the law. nroAn-
other factot was the aanendment
made to the act last session, fixing
the minimum fine for non-compli-
ance of the act at $10, instead of
allowing the justices' of the Peace
discretionary po-wer. -which was
sometimes abtesecl. The larger fine
has induced many to pay their
license fee and avoid trouble. *

According to reports fie= Cape
Town the enthusiastic response to
the Government offices, raihvays,
and banks are eagerly offering
their services to an extent threaten-
ing to paralyze the ordinary admini-
stration of affairs. Many mer-
chants over fifty years of age are
volunteering. The mercantile
houses of Cape Town are already
so short-handed owing to previous
enlistments that they may put a
veto on any more of their employes
going. Rural loyalists are also re -
spending well to the call.
