A general strike of the goal miners
of Nova Bootie, is i111lninont, ' The
managers of the various 'collieries
in Pictou, Cumberland and Cape
Breton counties, met at Montreal a
month ago, and again at Halifax
last week, and considered the de-
mand of the miners,presented throe
months since, for a 12 per cent. in-
crease of wages all round on Janu-
ary 1st, and a further ihereose of 100
r','r cent. next April. The operators
ie. reed the new year increas=e of 12
per Bent., but declined to accede to
the April demand. The decision
was communicated to the represent-
•ttives of the miners Friday, and
rc ports from different miners Fri-
day night said the men were deter-
mined to :strike on Monday. The

in the coal mines of the provinee is
stated by the Provincial-Uovern-
ment returns for 1890 to be 4',000
. and the total annual output of coal
2,3Out000 tons. With the comple-
tion of new shafts now being, sunk,
the capacity of the mines will reach
nearly four million tons in 1901,
employing (1,000 nien, The nlinler
are members of the Provincial
Workman's Association,with lodges
at all the coileries.
