expensive operation, when a man,

it wee found that sending Smith into

the city 8785.05. The various bills

NISEN TO SOUND NIAABA
An Adventurer Has a Scheme
to Plumb the River,
' BOWSER" TO TRY AGAIN.
Peder Nissen, the Chicagoan who,
under the ia.me olf Bowser, recently
shots the whirlpool rapids below Nia-
gara Fa11e;s is goitng t,o atitempt the
same feat agate in. the near future.
T'h:s time Nissen, es to make the dan-
gerous trip !n the name of science,
for he will endeavor to ascertain
facts in regard to the river which
up to tate present tame have remained
shrouded In Mastery.
Some ayenrs ago Government engin-
verse endeavored to take soundings in
Niagara at the point where the
Grand Trunk bridge crosses the
river. As a plumb -bob they used a
700 pound chunk of lead, whit= they
threw from the bridige. The lead
floated off down stream like a pine
slidmrgle and when it reached the
length, of the cable tto wheoh it was
attaebed , the latter €!napped like
a tow string from the 'force with
which the lead was carried by the
water. That expertmenft, ead.ed the
efforts of Government, officials, and
all others 'as well, to ascertain the
depths of the rapids. So to -day the
depths of both the upper and lower
rapids, as well as the w11ar1paol, re-
main: unknown. At, only one. paint be-
tween the Falls and Leeesten., five
or eta' miles blow, has a eourding ever
been successfully made. This was
some distance above the upper rapids
and just below the Falls, near the
boat landing. Front that point on
down to Lewiston the distance from
the surface of the rt:ver to the bot-
tom. Is unknown. Nissen proposes to
gco to the bottom), as. !t were, of this
mystery.
Near the middle of September he is
otter more going to hap into lits n:bn-
si.nkahle little twenty -foot boat at a
point close to the mill, and just below
the upper ,'arch bridge," about where
he entered the water before, and
start in tit' direction of the whirlpool.
The death-ctefyi.ng mariner will take
with lieu itt his boat the paraphernalia
for taking soundings, and as he shoots
dew(:. the rapids he will throw out hie
plumb -bub attachel to many Mulched
feet of wire and do las best to measure
the depth of the ssvirlteg river. Ni see

A YEAR, OF 364 DAYS.
ISSUE NO 34.1900
Swiss Professor'11 Plass to • ImXar (t I .
the Gregorian Calendar.
Professor Gloselaude. of the Uni-
versity of the '4sateiimaker's Art, in
Geneva, has suggested a novel way
Of reforming the calendar, says a
Berlin despatch to the New York
Journal. Tee purpose of the projeet-
ed reform is to abolish the most mis-
chievous point of the existing sys-
teip, which renders it impossible to
tell the day of the week on which
any glean elate fails. The cause of
this is the fact that the number of
days ire a week (seven) is not a prime
factor of the number of days in a
year (365). If the year contained
only 864 days it would consist of ex-
actly. 52 weeks, and could be divided
Leto four equal quarter years of 91
days each.
The first two months would then
each contain 30 days, the third
month 81 clays. Naturally the 365th
flay cannot merely be dropped with-
out carrying confusion to tate. Gre-
gorian system, and Groselaude svou:d
Ita.ve lit inserted between December
3.1 and January lst, ginning; it no
date, but calling it the "year's day."
In leap years another day would, of
lcourse, have to be added, and
the most opportune dates for the
Insertion are deemed by Grosclaude
to be June 30 tend July 1. This. day
is to be called "leap day."
This suggested mode of reforming
tite calendar miry at test. sight be
condemned as futilely bizarre. In
reality it has many excellent points
to recommend int. For instance, the
weekdays would fall upon the same
dates in successive years. Titus, if
the year were to begin on a Monday
the Sundays of the first quarter
woltid be the dates 7, 14, 21, 28 ; the
Sundays of the second quarter 5,
12, 19, 26.
For the commercial world n• change
of this kind would be of inestimable
advantage, as the business month
t:ould invariably be calculated at 30
days, for inasmuch as only every
third month has 31 days the thirty-
first day would always fall upon a
