The Sanctified Saloon.
Dr. Eokman writes with keen
irony as follows:
Lot us build more saloons; and
make thein as attractive and as
respectable and as remunerative as
possible. How practical it is ! How
the church would flourish if she
were wise enough to threw herself
heartily into, this unique tem.
porance propaganda! "Not men
enough in the congregations," we
often complain. Well, place a beer
garden alongside the church, and a
roof garden on top of it, and under
the shadow of the cross which sur-
mounts the steeple serve cool
drinks during the heated term,
which shall induce a gentle intoxi-
cation, while you "reason of right-
eousness, temperance, and a jeidg-
ment to.come," and the problem of
Of evangelizing the masses and
holding the male populatiun to the
church will be solved.
It is a wonderful age,iny piasters,
and we must not fall out of proces-
sion. Let us sing the doxology
once more, and receive the bishop's
benediction, and be thankful we
are living in such stirring, intoxi-
cating times, remembering;the clos-
ing words of the saloon dedication
address the other day, in which it
was said that the opening of the
new tavern "is in many respects
the greatest social movement New
York has ever known." It reminds
one of Wendell Phillips' story of
the noble English lord who, return-
ing from his club in a maudlin con-
dition one night, and seeing a com-
rade hopelessly intoxicated in the
gutter, said, thickly. "Sorry I
can't help you up, my friend ; but
I'll do the next bust thing. I'll lie
down by your side."—Christian
Advocate.
