A heeeydownfall of rain oecured here on JIonday,evening and it continued rain- ing through the night, and on Tuesday a great deal of rant fell. Many of the cel- lars in the village were flooded and the need of bettter.du:linage was amply mani- fested.. Reports indicate that the recent strong winds have done much damage to the win- ter apple crop. In most of the orchards the ground is literally covered with apples which have fallen, and it is thought at least half of the crop is blown down. By falling they are iarjered far packing. The heavy rain of Tuesday evening caused quite a flood in our village. The metiers of a number of the business places were flooded and a great deal of damage resulted. Mr. J. D. Monier is the heaviest loser, the water in the cellar of his store rising so high as to damage a large amount of butter and other perishable goods. The loss is ostitraated at about $150. Mr. D. S. Faust also suffered some loss. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Steck- le, of the Bronson line, Stanley, was visit- ed by the Angel of .Death on Monday morning, when there eldest child, )Norman, was taken up to the host that have gone before. The boy had reached the ago ' of 10 years, 7 months and 3 days, and for a year or more was unable to walk. Tito king's birthday is on November 9th, and royal salutes will be fired on that date at the military centers of Canada. A business meeting, of the Directors of the )lay Branch Agricultural Society was held iu the Town Hall here on Friday last. After the business part of the meeting was over the matter of purchasing a new fair ground was taken up, and it was de- cided to call a meeting of the members, as advertised in another column of this issue. Air. Abraham Lehman has sold his 100 - acre farm on the Bronson line to Mr. Joseph Smith, the consideration being ,nZ000. The farm is a goori one and well worth the money. Mr. Lehman has de- cided to give up farming and has- pur- chased the cottage in town from the Zettel estate, paying therefor $075, and himself and wife will become residents of Zurich shortly. Mr. Louis Schilbe, of the 14th concession met with a serious accident on, Monday of last week. He was in the :let of hanging in a door, and not being able to reach quite high enough had placed a Wheel- barrow near so he could stand on it. While fu this position, in some way he lost his balance and the wheel -barrow upsetting, lvir. Schilbe fell heavily on it, with the re- sult that a number of his ribs on the left side were fractured. He has been under the doctor's 'care since the aeoident and has suffered Meets pain, but, we are glad to.say, is progressing favorably at present. (Locals continued on page .8.)
