Johnston and F.: Hoss, Sr., were in Bayfield, Thurs- day, and acted as judges on some of the inside departments. It is proposed to authorize post- masters and deputies to open letters on -which no postage Stamps are placed, to learn the name of the writer and avoid sending the letters to the dead letter office, This can be avoided by having the names and addresses of the writer's print- ed on the outside of the envelope. It don't cost much, looks better, helps the printer and saves a lot of unnecessary trouble. Try it. Word has been received here of the death of a former and well- known resident of this place, but now of Detroit, in the person of Mr. Joseph Lenz at the age of 72 years. Deceased had been ailing for somne time from dropsy and on Friday last death relieved him. Re was much respected by all who knew him. The funeral was held on Monday, the remains being in- terred in a Detroit cemetery: To kick because a newspaper fails to give every scrap of news, so Ilong as you fail to give the news- man any information, is exceeding- ly more than unreasonable. Some readers are awfully put out at times because no note has been made of their departure or arrival of friends visiting them, or of social affairs, or of heaven-sent babies. The average reporter is no medium nor yet, a mind reader and gets most of his news by pumping. At a meeting of the executive committee of the South Riding of Huron, as constituted for Dominion purposes, held at Brumfield, it was decided to hold a convention for the selection of a candidate on Tuesday, October llth. at 11 o'clock a. m., at Miller's hall, Hensall. South Huron, as now constituted. is composed of the townships of McKillop, Tuckersmith, Usborne, Stephen, Hay and Stanley ; the town of Seaforth and the villages of Exeter, Hensall and Bayfield. SLABTOWN Special to THE HERALD. Mrs. Joseph Wiggins, of Inger- soll, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mr. John Hey, at present. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Fassold, of Dashwood, visited at Mr. John Hey's on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. William Rader, of the 14th, visited at Mr. Hy. Neeb's on Sunday last. Misses Lydia Deeher and Lillie Blatchford spent Sunday at Mr. Louis Rader's. Mr, John Decher has dealt his 3 - year -old sorel broncho on a pair of well -mated black bronchos to Mr. Joseph Danes, of Crediton. Mr. Wmn, Calfas is on the line with his traction engine. Mr. Walter Anions has been help- ing Mr. Wm. Rader to cut his corn, Walter will likely be kept busy as he is an expert at cutting corn. DASHWOOD Special to THE HERALD. Sol. Martin and wife of the Baby- lon line spent Sunday with Mr. J. E. Hoffman. Mr. Fred. Granville of Mani- toulin Island was in the village renewing old acquaintances. Dr. Campbell of Zurich was in the village Tuesday last., Mr, J. Stacey painter of Hensall is helping Mr. Henderson with the graining at E. P. Paulin's house. A number of our citizens took in the World's Fair at Zurich, Thurs- day and -the W. 0. T. U. concert in the evening. Mr. Louie Piteeter was the happy father of a young daughter Monday lust. Miss Almmmina Motter is attending business college at Exeter. Mrs. John Freid and children, of London, are at present, visiting at the hotne of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kellerman. Mrs. (Rev.) Clemens returned Monday from the Y. P. A, conven- tion s.t Campden. Mrs. Ezra Tienian was under the doctor's care for a few days last week. We are pleased to see her around again. Herb Miller left Tuesday tnorn- ing for Edmonton, where his brother Mose is running a large dry goods business. Two events of more than passing interest occured here Tuesday even- ing in the form of a double wed- ding. Mr. Daniel Schaffer was. united in holy wedlock to 'Miss Kate Wildfong, both of this place, The Wedding ceremony was con- ducted by the Rev. Mr. Clenens in the presence of a few immediate relatives. The happy couple will leave on Wednesday morning on a wedding trip amid the hearty good wishes of all friends of Mr. and Mrs. Scliaffor.—The second wed ding wail at tbo home of Mr. Thos, Clark of the Babylon line when his daughter; Sophia, was united in marriage to Mr. Ismond of Chioago in the presence of a largo number of friends. Rev. Mr. • Clemens officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Ismond will leave shortly for their new home in Chicago, we wish them a long and happy wedded life. It is our painful duty to chronicle the death of a highly respected resident of the 14th in the person of the late Mrs. Fred, Willert, Mrs. Willert has been in failing health for years but in this last illness was a victim of that dreaded disease consumption, which ended her earthly cares when she quietly passed away Wednesday morning, !Sept. 21st. She leaves to mourn the irreparable loss a husband and five children. Mr. Willert and family have the entire sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. Mrs. Willert was a daughter of Mr. Jacob Rader of this place. Beattie is doing a big business in the cider and chopping business. . Miss Mrggie Adh, of London, is at present visiting friends and relatives in and around our village. Miss Pearl Nicholson and Miss Laura Hartleib visited at the Com- mercial hotel on Saturday and Sun- day. Many of our citizens took in the World's Fair at Zurich and report a very good show, Busting bronchos is the order of the day in our burg. Mr. Ross Johnston, who has for some time been confined to the house on account of sore throat is again able to be out and seems to be improving very fast. HENSAL.L Special to THE HERALb. The rate of taxation for the vil- lage for 1904 is 12 mills. An alarm of fire was given the other night and in a short time the engine and hose real were gotten out. It proved, however, to be a false one, the result of the dream of a little boy, who dreamt that the house was on fire and waking up he gave the alarm. Tho Harvest Home Thanksgiving services held in St. Paul's church were well attended. The church was beautifully decorates]. Rev. Mr. Lowe, of Wingham, preached two powerful sermons. Mr. Moise'7, of the Molsons 'staff, is spending his vacation at his horse near Woodstock. • Mr. H. J D. Cooke and the Miss- es Shirray have returned from an extended tour through Scotland, England, Ireland and France. Mrs. McTavish and children, of Detroit, visited at the hone of Mr. Fred McDonnell last week. On Wednesday of last week Rev, E. Shaw, united Geo. Van Horn, telegraph operator, London, and Miss Rycknian, of Chiselhurst, in marriage. A large number of in- vited friends witnessed the cere- mony. The happy couple will live in London. After about ten years of helpless and protracted suffering' Elim Butt of this place passed away on Tues- day of last week at the age of 80 years, The deceased had lived near Exeter for a number of years after which he moved onto a fattn near Kippen, where she resided till a year ago when he moved to Hen- sall. The funeral was held last Thursday, the retrains being in- terred in the Exeter cemetery. Married.
