Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Merner are attending the St. Louis fair. Don't ni.iss a great treat by not attending the concert, Sept. 22nd Mr. Robert Williams returned from the West last Saturday even- ing. Miss Roxie Eilber spent a few days • this week with friends in Hensall. One of best concerts ever given will be held in the Town Hall on fair night. Mr. William Raercher, of Pon- tiac, returned to his home here last Saturday. Mr. Elmore Magel, of Detroit, visited his parents here for a few days this week. Mr. Wm. Thiel swapped horses with Mr. John Moyer, of Wagner's Corner, the other day. Mr. H. Magel is improvieng the front of his livery baron by the application of a coat of paint. Miss Greybiel, of Heidelberg, is visiting at the home of Mr. Ernst Gies, of the Blind line, this week. A pail of water standing in a room newly -painted will 'quickly absorb tlae disagreeable odor of the paint. The infant child of Mr. :and Mrs. Andrew Thiel is very sioz..at pre- sent. Slight hopes are entertained for its recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Chris. Eilber, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Hamacher, and Miss Ida Brill, were guests of Mr. Kraft, of the town luxe, last Sun- day. A great many front the village and vicinity attended the London exhibition this week. By reports the fair seems to be up to other years in high class exhibits. Mr. W. G. Hess is the possessor of a new bass horn. It is a big one and by the additiean of it the volume of sweet sound produced by the hand should b& materially - increased. A few drops of oil 'of lavender poured into a glass sof very hot water will purify the air in a room almost instantly from cooking vegetables, and is refreshing in a sick room. An automobile passed through our village last Sunday and creat- ed the usual excitement. The day is not far distant when they will be as common as an evenly day horse tend buggy. • Mr. F. W. Hess has been appoint-. ed leader of our band, and tinder his efficient management it is steadily improving. Mr. Hess is a musician of long standing and under his capable leadership the band ought to make good headway. Mr. McCartney an old thresher lost his life on Saturday while try- ing to save his cleaner at the burn- ing barn belonging to Alexander Badour, of Goderich Tp. Mr, iadour lost his barn and crop and we understand there was no in(sur- annee, his policy having expired about two weeks before. A practical fruit grower says it is an exceptional case when it is considered (advisable to cultivate the orchard late in the season. Late cultivation tends to promote Iate growth. Unless the new growth has time to mature and harden before severe cold weather sets in, severe injury from winter - killing may result. Next Wednesday and Thursday the Hay Branch Agricultural Socie- ty will hold their annual fair on the grounds in this village. This is always a festive time with the townspeople and many visitors from far and near are entertained on the latter day. The fair this year promises to be exceptionally good as the directors aro sparing no pains to make it a success. Mrs. John Yager, her son Alexan- der and daughter, Tillie, of Exeter, were the guests of the Rev. W. J. Yager, of this place, Alexander has not seen his uncle for 14 years and was naturally very happy in meeting him before he returns to Swift Current, Assa., where he has a very good position with the 0, P. Bradwin, of the Blyth Standard, was in to'vn on Tues- day, and gave THE HERALD a short call. • Mr. Hartman Steinbach, of De- troit, is spending a few weeks with relatives and friends in this vicinity. Remember that the business places of Zurich will be closed from two to four o'clock next Thursday afternoon, fair day. Dr. Campbell is- improving the appearance of his. residence by having a. cement walk and a new fence built in front of it. Mr. Fred. Demuth is tearing down the old house on his property at the South end, and will use the material to build a kitchen to his dweiling. Henhefer was called to Waterloo County on Tuesday last to attend the funeral of his mother, who died there the previous Mon- day, at the age of :13 years. No services were held in the Evangelical church here last Sun- day. the pastor, Rev. Mr. Yaeger, taking part in the quarterly ser- vices held in the 14th con. church. By all reports the pea harvest in this section will he a big one this fall. It is said that the yield has not been so large for a great many years and they are said to be "hug - less." A despatch to The Toronto Star from Ottawa says the general ex- pectation at that city is that a general election for the Dominion will take place Iate in October or early in November. Mr. Bert Dunn, of the Bronson line, Stanley,left on Tuesday morn- ing for Park River, N. Dakota, where he will study the drug busi- ness. Bert is a smart and temper- ate young man and will be sire to make a success in his chosen pro- fession. If your plants are troubled with lice, dip a feather in kerosene and brush them with it. After a few minutes, wash them thoroughly in good warm soap -suds and rinse in waren water and the lice will dis- appear. For delicate plants omit the kerosene. Mr. T. Pfeffer, who has acted as accountant in the Sovereign Dank here, for about eight months, has been transferred to the Milverton branch. Mr. Pfeffer has made many friends during his stay among us. Mr. Lorne Scott, of the Hensall branch, has been Moved here. _ Mrs. T. H. Race, wife of the editor of the Mitchell Recorder, is dead after a lingering illness, Mr, Race has been serving as Com,. niissioner of the Canadian Fruit Exhibit in the St. Louis Exposition.
