The past week has been great sap weather, and those who have tap- ped trees are reaping a good har- vest. Mr. John Sheritt, M. P. for N. Middlesex, was attending the Fire In:4L11•aneti meeting in town last uturduy. Miss Helma Koehler, who is at- tending Central Business College at Stratford, is spending her Easter holidays at her home, The dance held at Rau's on Mon- day night was a success, The Ex- celsior Orchestra furnished excel- lent music for the occasion. Mr. Fred Witwer left for Pigeon, Mich. Thursday last, to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law, Mr. Henry Geiger, who died. last week. Mr. Adam Faust's cow presented him with twin -calves on April lst. They are both living, Mr. Chris. Zimmerman, of the Goshen, having bought them. Mr. Beattie has :purchased the chopping and cider mill from John Thirsk, Blake. The mill iius been standing idle all winter on account of scarcity of fuel, Mr. John Prang and family, of Goderich, spent Easter with his mother here. John has started a Coal and wood yard in the connty town and reports prospects bright,. Mr. W. G. Hess has moved his bicycle shop ; he is now located above the jewelry shop. He reports business very good. this spring, having no less than thirty bicycles in his shop at present to be repair- ed. ' • Mr. Conrad Schilbe purchased twenty-five acres of land from Mr. Samuel Dietz, the consideration be- ing $1245.00. There is considerable wood on the premises and several overflowing wells, which makes • it a fine place for pasture. A number of young follows were out this week inspecting maple syrup operations and claim to have found a young farmers near town who had tapped a basswood tree in mistake for a maple. It may he a new process for making basswood honey. We are indebted to Mr. Daniel Smith of the Lake shore for the first taste of maple syrup this sea- son. Dan knows how to make good syrup, but says the crop will likely be short owing to the cold weather. His intention is to tap about four , hundred trees 'next season. The Dominion Football Club held a re -organization meeting last Thursday night. The boys are taking a good hold of the matter and prospects seem bright for a winning team for 1904. The fol-' lowing officers were appointed : Pres., R. F. Stelck; Captain,Albert Shetler ; Soey-'.Ureas,, Andrew Hess. A number of young lads have recently been in the habit of throw- ing stones and breaking windows after dark. The boys are quite young and the least the parents could do would be to keep their offspring in the house after dark. Mr. Henry Bauer has purchased the house and lot, south of the Lutheran church owned. by Mrs. Elizabeth Hess. We have not heard whether Mr. Bauer intends moving to town or not. Soine farmers in this locality re- port much damage done by the field -mice the past winter.. They have attacked orchards, eating away the bark at the base of the trees. Grape vines have also suf- fered. Mr. Christ Eilber has entered his colt, Fred E., in the Stratford races, which will be held on June 29th, 30th and July 1st, ('his. has a very promising, colt and he is show- ing up splendid. He recently re- fused an offer of $250 for hint. Dr. George Schoeilig, of Detroit, arrived home Saturday evening, for a short visit to his parents. He left again on Monday, his brother, Wesley, accompanying hien. Wes. has secured a good job in a whole- sale and retail hardware in Detroit. We wish him success. Messr. F. Hess & Son are now in a position to put rubber -tyres on any and all kinds of buggies. They have received their rubber -tyre plant,•and no doubt will put many of the tyres On buggies, now sett with steel tyres, as rubber-tyred buggies have come into public favor the last few years. He was working at the rip -saw, sawing up some short basswood boards into strips', when .his right hand slipped and was caught in the fast revolving saw, with the result that the.seconcl finger was nearly taken off and the first and third, also badly bruised. Perri will he laid off for a few weeks, but still he has the consolation that it might have been worse. The factory of the Magnet Cream S. Co.,Guelph,is almost in complete ruins as a result of a fire. This is one of the only two cream separat- or factories in ('anacla, and the company has been doing a very ex- • tensive business. About one hund- red inen are thrown out of work. There is insurance on the building and contents to the extent of $20,000. Mr, J. F. Rickboil has the agency for the "Magnet" in this district.
