Windsor, Ont., Feb. 24.— It has
just leaked out that Orr Bros. oat-
meal mill of Windsor has been ab-
sorbed by the trust, the Canadian
•Oatmeal Manufacturing Company,
completing a list of 25 mills in Ont-
ario alone. •
The company has been after the
Windsor mill, the only remaining
one outside their jurisdiction in
Ontario, for some time, and now
that they have it, it is likely that
the price of oatmeal will be ad-
vanced, as the trusts control 90 per
cent of the oatmeal manufactories
in the Dominion.
Was The Blind Man's Dog Vicious?
W. II. Allen, a. blind man, who
earns a living by playing a hand
organ on the streets, appeared in
the police court yesterday on a
charge of allowing a vicious dog to
be at.large. The dog, which was
not in evidence, belongs to the St.
Bernard breed. and it is alleged to
have bitten a boy- A doctor's cer-
tificate was produced, however,
stating that the boy's injuries only
consisted of a slilltt abrasion. It
appears that the dog is a valuable
friend of the man, conducting him
about the streets with remarkable
skill. The case was adjourned for
tt week.
The above is taken from Mon-
day's Advertiser and no doubt has
reference to blind Allen, who is
familiar with most of us. He has
not been in these parts for some
time. '
sible objection."
"They are lovely darlings," said
the would-be M. P., after he had
finished the eleventh. I have sel-
dom seen more beautiful babies.
Are they yours, ma'am?"
Tho lady blushed deeply.
"Of course they are, the sweet
little treasures. Froin whom else,
ma'am, could they have inherited'
those limpid eyes, those rosy cheeks
those profuse curls, those comely
figures, and those musical voices?"
The lady continued blushing.
"By the way, ma'am," said he,
"may I bother you to tell your es-
timable husband that Richard J.
Spouter, parliamentary candidate
for this division, culled on him this
evening?"
"Excuse me, sir," said the lady ;
"1 have no children."
"But these children, madam—
you are surely not a. widow."
"I feared you were mistaken, sir,
when you first came up. These are
not my children. This is an orphan

THE G'LOBE'S WAR NEWS.
From Special Correspondents in the
Field.
The Russo -Japan conflict has
commenced in earnest, and that
part of the world is now the centre
of interest.
In order that our readers may be
kept in the closest touch with the
situation, we have made special
arrangements whereby they can
have Tho Weekly Globe for the
year 1004 on specially liberal terms.
The Globe with its usual enter-
prise has made arrangements with
The London Thnes whereby it is
able to publish simultaneously the
reports sent direct from the scene
of action, The Times, London Eng-
land, has established its reputation
as being the greatest and most re-
liable news -gatherer in the world,
and our readers can have full bene-
fit of its excellent staff of corres-
pondents by reading The Daily or
Tho Weekly Globe.
The Globe has the exclusive con-
trol of this service in Canada and
these reports will not appear in
their original form in. any other
Canadian publication.
A summarized report with every
item of interest will be specially
written for The Weekly Globe, en-
abling readers to gain a thorough
knowledge of the situation without
the trouble of reading coloums of
contradictory and confusing re-
ports.
The Weekly Globe, with its illus-
trated section and many interesting
features, is"now one of the cleanest
and brightest newspapers in Ameri-
ca, and we are pleased to be able to
announce that the arrangements
just completed will enable subscrib-
ers to secure it for this year at a
special price.
There are two little seaports on
an island. off the Asiatic; coast
which may play a very important
part in the Russo-Japanese war.
Naval strategists believe that one
of the first things Russia will try
to do is to cut off the coal supply of
the Japanese fleet, if possible, and
from the two places referred to
cones a large proportion of the fuel
burned on the Mikado's warships.
They aro both situated on the is.
land of Hokkaido, or Jezo, which
adjoins the island of Nippon—the
largest of the empire—on the north.
Jezo is directly east of Russian pos-
sessions in Asia, and a steamship
leaving Vladivostok could reach
either port easily in two clays, as
they are not over 500 miles from
the mainland.
The mines on the island of Hok-
kaido are in several great groups,
although but a part of the territory
of coal bearing deposits has been
examined by geologists and miner-
al. They have estimated that the
groups owned by the company re-
ferred to alone contain fully 550,
000 tons of coal, near enough to the
surface to be easily secured. The
Sarachi roup is the largest at pre-
sent operated, and comprises an
area of 5.500 acres, upon which
have been found ten veins ranging
from 3 feet to 7 feet in thickness ;
but the greatest producers are the
mines of the Yubari group, repre
senting about 4,800 acres., for here
have been found veins no loss than
25 feet in thickness. Analyses of
the coal show it to be a high-grade
bituminous, excellent for not only
steaming but gas and coke making,
so the company has built a large
number of coke ovens in connection
with the pits. The third group
known as the Purowai wines, is
considerably smaller, comprising
only about 727 acres, while the
fourth covers about 600 .acres.
He Felt Like Two Cents.
"Madam, may I kiss these beauti-
ful children?" inquired' a candidate
for the corning bye -election, in the
Midlands the other day who was
on a tour round. the constituency,
.as he leaned over the front gate.
"Certainly sir; there is no pos-
