BRITAIN,
No Remission of Taxation to be
Proposed boring, the Nest Ses-
sion of Parliament,
London, Jan, 22.—The Chancellor
of the Exchequer, Mr. Austen
Chamberlain, replying to the toast
":Elis Majesty's Ministers," at the
banquet of the Carpenter's Com-
pany, which was held here last
night, said that unless a great
change ocoured within the next
few months in the revenue returns,
there would be little prospect of
realizing ,the budget anticipations,
and that he was afraid he would
not be able to propose a remission
of taxation during this session of
Parliament.
He explained that the Somaliland
campaign had proved to be much
more costly than had been antici-
pated, and that the purchase and
equipment of the two Chilian bat-
tleships had been another mlpx-
peotod financial drain. He said
there would be special need for
economy in the national expendi-
ture for some years to come,

There aro some curious facts
about our calendar. No century
can begin on Wednesday, Frida-y or.
Sunday. The same calendars can
be .used every 20 years. October
always begiris on the same day of
the week as January,April as July,
September' as December, February,
March and November begin on the
same days. May, June and August
always begin on different days
from each other and every other
month of the year. The first ancl
last days of the year are always
the same. These rules do not apply
to leap year.
At an organization meeting of the
Liberals of Grenville County, Mr.
A. Whitney, a brother of Mr. J. P.
Whitney, the Conservative leader,
was elected president. The meet-
ing resolved " that we are inspired
by feelings of pride and gratifica-
tion that the banner province of
this confederation stands foremost
in the world as being free from all
debt under the honorable adminis-
trations of Sir Oliver Mowat,
Hon. A. S. Hardy, and our highly
esteemed leader, the Hon. G. W.

The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto,

The sick

has the
MASSAGE FOR RHEUMATISM. same claim
and the same privileges as the Toronto
child born within sight of its walls.
This is the reason that the Trustees ap-
peal to the fathers and mothers of On-
tario—for as their money goes out to help
the Hospital so the Hospital's mercy can
go out to help the children.
This is the 28th year of the Hospital's
life. The story of the years is a wonder-
ful one—for in that period 10,000 children
have been treated, and over 5,000 cured
and 3,000 improved.
Last year there were SGS boys and girls
in its beds and cots, and of these 493 were
cured and 247 improved.
Look at these pictures of club feet—be-
fore and after.
BEFORE AFTER;
Of the 868 patients 293 came from 210
Olives outside of Toronto.
In three years the patients from different
tarts of Ontario, not Toronto, average 250
'—nearly a third of the entire number.
In six. years 1,400 outside patients have
been treated --and for 20 years past they
will average 100 a year.
The average stay of every patient was
54 days, the cost per patient per day 94o.
A dollar or two means a small lot of
oney out of your pocket, but it takes a
:lig load of misery out of some little life.
The X Ray department gives wonderful
results. A girl came in with a double
thumb on one haul. She left with one
thumb—a perfect pant
Seo what the hand of the Surgeon does
for the crippled childmn of Ontario.
Your money means mercy to somobody's
child.
Your money can cheer some mother's
heart by saving some mother's ehild.
Health and wealth. You give wealth to
the Hospital, and the Hospital gives
health to the children.
The Corporation of
ronto gives $7,500
a year to the Hospi-
tal for the main-
tenance of every
child, whether from
city or country.
The citizens of
Toronto contribute
about $7,000 a
year towards the
main benance of yr .

Toronto does its share in the good work, I
and the Trustees ask you to do yours.
The Newspaper Proprietors of Ontario I
have kindly helped the Hospital by insert-
ing our appeals.
There aro two newspaper cots, and boys
and girls from the country are placed in
the cots founded by the newspaper men.
Look at the pictures of "before and
after." They tell their own story—surely
you will help us in this good work.
If your dollar could straighten the feet
of a little boy or girl with club -feet you
would gladly give it, and your dollar will
help to do that.
