Mr. G. Edighoffer's son of the 14th
Con. placed a note in a barrel of
Baldwin Apples, requesting . the
buyer to write him concerning
them. Mr. Edighoffer this week
received a letter from Winkler,
Manitoba, dated. Jan. ` 6th, 1904,
written in German by a Mr. Jacob
Fehr. The writer says the apples
were excellent ,and that he pur-
chased them in Winkler from. B.
Loeman for $3.75. , The writer also
asks to know what Mr. Edighoffe
got per bbl. and will no doubt be
surprised when he hears that they,
were bought here for $1.00.

Two of our pugilists met the
other day in front of James Hagan's
farm, formed a ring, and started
fighting and had about five rounds
when the father of one`of the pugi-
lists came to their assistance and
ended the fighting. Now we hope
in the future that these interested
parties wili be more law abiding.
Mr. Thos. Farquhar entertained
a few of his Hillsgreen friends the
other evening, all report having
had a good time.
Mr. Wm. Jarrott delivered a load
of rails to Thos. Luker, of Hensall,
last Friday.
Mr. Sam Reichert paid a flying
visit to James Coclirane's last Sun-
day. Sam must have some attrac-
tion there.
Mr. Frani* Farquhar left last
Monday to attend Stratford Busi-
ness College. Frank is tired of
farming.
While going to Hensall the. other
day, Geo. Troyer had the misfor-
tune of getting fast in the snow
with his fancy team, but they
escaped without a scratch.
Mr. Ralph Workman is 'on the
sick list again. Ralph is having
his share of sickness this winter.

Wants Garibaldi to Lead Expedi-
tion Against Turks.
Rome, Jan. 11.—Boris Sarafoff,
the Macedonian revolutionary lead-
er, whose arrival in Rome the press
here erroneously announced on the
3rd inst., only arrived in this city
last night.
One of the chief objects of Sara-
foff's conning to Italy is to induce
Gen. Ricciotti Garibaldi, son of the
Italian patriot, to lead an expedi-
tion to free Macedonia from Turk-
ish rule, similar to the expedition
which Garabaldi headed at the
time of the Greco -Turkish war,
St. Petersburg, Jan. 8.—An im-
perial rescript to the Governor-
General of Finland directs to gover-
nor to dismiss all Finns employed
in the state of municipal services
who have not fulfilled their mill -
tart' service in the Finnish. rifle
battalion during 1908, and not to
issue foreign passports to them for
five years.
British trade last year was the
highest by d',25,000,000 in the his-
tory of the country.

general manager of the Union Bank

Archibald Edward Stuart, who is
confined in the Toronto Jail on a
charge of vagrancy, has admitted
that he is William. Brown, the
Coachman who married.' the coun-
tess of Russell under the name of
the Prince Athrobald Stuart de
Modena,
A, E. Ames & Co., Toronto, will
be unable to meet the second instal-
ment of their obligations to their
creditors due on the 15th inst. It
is said that such securities as now
remain to be liquidated are largely
of Ontario industrial concerns.
London,Jan. 8.—Wheb,t advanced
a further shilling per quarter to-
day, in some of the provincial mar-
kets on the prospect of war. About
116,000 tons of coal were shipped
from Cardiff, Wales, during the
past week, 46,000 to Japan, 40,000
to Port Arthur and 30,000 to Hong
Kong.
Prince Edward Island fishermen
are making from $3 to $5 a daycatching smelts, at five and six
cents• a pound. A dealer states that
he has paid $150 to one man for
one day's catch, with the mercury
at zero. The best of these fishes
go to New York and Boston.
Aden, Arabia, Jan. 11.—An en-
gagement in Somaliland between
a British force and the forces of
the Mad Mullah has resulted in a
severe defeat of the latter, who lost
one thousand men killed. The
British had twq,_o1iicers killed and
eight officers severely wounded.
