Surerus Vice -President of the Hay Fire Ins• Co., onTuesday, Master Wellington Johnston is in Toronto this week—his first trip to the Queen City—it ought to be an interesting one. Mr. Peter Lamont is in Toronto this week, with a couple of cars' of Butcher's cattle—the first shipment since the holidays. The Misses Armstrong, of La Ri- viera, Manitoba, are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong, Goshen Line, Stanley. Mr. John Sherrit, M. P., for N. Middlesex, was in Town on Tuesday attending the annual meeting of the Hay Fire Insurance Co. Mr. Norman Bock is in Gocterich, woz•kin& at the Organ Factory.— Between 150 and 175 are said;to -be employed in the works. The County Council of the Coun- ty of Huron is called to meet at Goderich on Tuesday; the 26th in- stant, at 3 o'clock p. m. Quito a number of' Bonsali boys visited the town on Sunday and spent a couple of hours pleasantly renewing acquaintances. Miss Mary Warm left for Chica- go, on Saturday. Her sister, Miss Louisa, accompanied her to Detroit where she will remain for the win- ter. Mr. Ortwein, of Hensall, who is in the field for the Reeveship of the sister village, was in town on Tues- day, and gave ye editor a friendly call. . Snow still continues to ,fall from time to time, and there is little fear of Any scarcity of the " beautiful," in this locality,, for some time to come. - Mrs. W. F. Finkbeiner, who was here on a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Faust, left for her home, in Milverton, yesterday morning. A number of Hensall friends paid a visit to Mr, Wm. Lamont, in Stanley, on Sunday afternoon,stop- ping at Zurich for several hours on their return. The hog market has not been very active lately and prices have re- mained stationary for several weeks at $5 per cwt., which is the ruling price at present. Mr. Erwin Motter, of the Hart- leib establishment, returned from his trip to Michigan, last week. He reports having had a pleasant time while there. Mr. J. B. Dennis, who' spent the holidays in town with his wife and friends, returned last week to Galt, where he intends taking up house in the near future. Mrs. Zinn and her two daughters, of Cavalier, North Dakota, are in town and will spend a few weeks visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Micheal Kaercher. Mr. Casper WVaIper entertained a number of neighbors and friends at a dancing party, at his residence, one night last week. It is said to have been an enjoyable affair. Mr. Peter Koehler recently pur- chased a splendid thorough-b>led bull from Mr. Jacob Roeder. This is considered the best animal of its class in this neighborhood and weighs 2300 lbs. Mr. Henry Silber, M. L, A., was perp on Tuesday, in connection with his duties as Manager of the Hay Ins. Co. He left on Wednesday to take up his duties as repreentative in the Leislature, which met for the transaction of business, yesterday.. A special meeting will be held in the Lodge room, this (Friday) evening, when several initiations are expected to take place. All, members are earn- estly requested to be present. One of the largest, a,s it was one of the most enjoyable dance parties, of the season, was given by the Messrs. McBride, of the Blind Line, on. Friday night. The arrange- ments are said to have been perfect and everything passed off, not only satisfactorily, but as pleasantly as could be wished for. An assault of a rather serious na- ture, took pace near the village of Blake, on Friday last, Mr, Thonias Sherritt, it is said, using both the lash as well as the handle of a whip, on his wife, who is now under the Doctor's care. The Crown is said to have taken up' the case, and Con- stable Gundry, of Goderich, is now looking for the offender, who is said to be out of the Country. Dr. Hamilton, V. S., showed us a three-legged calf, last week, which was a curiosity in:another way, as well : the entire inside being attach ed to the outside; and which inter- nal organs outwardly exposed was without a particle of hair covering. The calf was dead, and the limbs had to be 'broken before taken from the anital. The freak, aside froth the. defects noted, was other- wise well formed, and nearly if not quite; full grown. The following Township officers have been appointed, or re -appoint- ed, for the year 1904, together with. the salaries received byecc'h, viz.— Clerk, Fred Hess Sr., $1.25.00 ; Treas., Thos. Johnson, $90.00 ; As- sessor, H. Lipphardt, $65.00 ; Col- lector, Chas. Troyer, $75.00; Audi- tors; R. R. Johnson and J. ,J'c Mer- ner, $6.00 each. Dr. Buchanan, Messrs. Alex. McEwin, Jas. Bon- thron and H. Zimmerman are also appointed to other duties, salaries (if any) not stated. 29th Annual Insurance Meeting. The 29th Annual Meeting of the policy -holders and nicr.o,ibers of The Hay Township Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co., was held in the Town Hall, Zurich, on Tuesday, the 12th day of, January, 1904. The •meeting was well attended. It be- ing one of the largest in the history of the Company. Messrs. Wm.. Cunsit, Wm. La- mont and Christian Stade were elected Directors for a term of three years. During the past year, the Com- pany have issued 597 policies cov- ering an Insurance of $1,096,625 00 The year closed with 1815 policies in force insuring property to the amount of $3,388,100.00. Losses to the amount of $5638.60 have been paid and the year closed with cash in the Bank of $2347.84. The As- sets of the Company are $129,183.61 with no Liabilities. Annual Meeting, The annual meeting of the Hay Branch Agricultural Society was held in the Town Hall, on Wednes- day afternoon with President Cald- well in the chair. The Secy-Treas- urcr's and auditors' reports were adopted by the meeting. The cash balance on hand at the beginning of the year was $48.50, members paid up for 1904, $76.00, making a net balance of x;124.50 to the credit of the society, The following officers were elected for this year.
