I lutve also been receiving a good deiid of correspondence on the- question of temperance and 'prohibition. If you will kindly furnish me space. there are some few things I would like to say to the friends of our cause through - on?, the province. That there is a growing aversion to the traffic in whiskey is not to be doubted. The conscience, that intelligence, and the religion of the country are being aroused more than ever in opposition to it. .)?here is one tact the liquor men are clearly realizing, numely, that large numbers of the municipalities ob- ject to their trade, and will not tolerate the existence of licenses. • Hence they are making frantic appeals to the government to force licenses in rural districts. The outrageous demand wl ieh they are now melting is in effect that the will of the people shall be ignored in the shutter of grunting licenses. They demand that every municipal council shall be robbed of time- honored and constitutional rights, and that the government shall exercise a kind of imperious tyran- ny over the people, and compel them to submit to the nuisance of liquor license; Whether they will or no. The truth is that the licensed tavern is the most prolific source of crime and misery in any coln- Innnity Wherever it exists. It would be a dire calamity i 'tho Quebec Government should abuse its power in any wily by increasing the number of licenses. We have far too many already. We should rather regard it as being the im- perative duty of the government to diminish the number we now have. The people of Ontario have said by very nearly a hundred. thousand majority that the bar -room must go. More than half the i inicipal- ities in Quebec have done them- selves honor by closing tip the bar- room. It would be greatly to the advantage of the remaining half if they would fellow such a good exe mpg e . Just now the temperance people of this province are face to face with very important circumstances The time has come to sound the tnesin--to buckle on our tti'Illor—tn fall into line ; and to make a milted and determined forward ruovein ent co fight the pernicious liquor license. It is .a blot upon our civil- ization. It is a disgrace to our religion. It is a curse to our coun- try-. 'Whenever yeti resin the tragic story of some ?..murder, some shoot- ing stabbing, fighting, 'brawling— some horrid cruelties perpetrated npon wife, and children, those things do not in every instonee collie . from drink, but an over- whelming majority- of thein are the direct results of liquor. The next question. nncl it very important one, is, what is the work now to be done by temperance people? It may be that I ant somewhat radical in my views, but I have u. strong conviction that I ail) right. There should forthwith ill an official protest against any further granting of licenses in every muni- cipality in this province. We have been content lung enough to stand on the defensive, Let tee assnme an aggressive atti- tude. Old England has of late been carrying the war into Africa. The circumstances of the hour (I unan(1. that the temperance electorate of Quebec carry war into Africa. I do inoet earnestly appeal to my* brei•.hI'.+n of the Christian ministry of t.11 the clhhlrc•]tes to nni re in a nighty- strurg'oagainst the cnrze of leerier 'icon -to. I.et the member- ship of our C'hur'ches 1)e hL unit iIi the noble effort. i anneal in the name and in the fear of (=rod to my friends; of the xllliance, to the Royal Tenmplars— the Good Templers—the Sons of Temperance ; and especially to the good sisters of the White Ribbon army to unite in a vigorous cam- paign for the overthrow of the accursed license system. • Personally I would be pleased to forward the official blank forms for such .a protest, :Ind for the necessary signatures in opposition to license, and more than that, I would be willing as far as my time and strength will allow, to visit any municipality which )nay decide to make an effort to get rid of the license. There are some few things which as temperance workers we are much in need of. It is essential that we have a better and more effective organization. A much larger harvest of success might be gathered if we were More closely united. The liquor men Have perfect organization. We have not. If we had we 'could make a pretty clean sweep of the rural counties and districts of the province. Further, it seems to me that it would be wise if the Christian tem- perance people in every locality would promptly place themselves in communication with the govern- ment; and urge upon then) that they do not sanction any further extension of the license system. There is • an important amend- ment to the license law which should be pressed upon the govern- ment, and which it seems to me the government should readily accept. It is 'this: The question of license or no license' for the sale of liquor should be placed upon every ballot paper, in every muni- cipal election. There is just one more point to which I deem it right to refer. 48-tf Menem Sc BENDER, Zurich. The Quebec Branch of the Dominion Take cold easily? Throat tender? Lungs weak?
