Jonathan Hutchinson, during his
ont trip to India, made some inter -
ting observations on disease, and
eemn3e,nes upon them in his usual
erecting way. In the Polyclinic
or May appears an editorial on the
muse of cancer, which, if we mis-

he writer of the editorial (sills at-

Variety of cancer is an epltho-
tome., which is not peculiar in an
klstorical sense, but is merely of Lpeculiar origin. The site of the
row.th is either the abdomen or the
de of the thigh. Of 20 cases, re-
tied by 'Elmsiie as long ago as
866, four were in females and 16
in males. •
Dr, tElmslie attributed the disease
a curious local custom of the{ in-
aebitants of. Kashmir. It seems that
ashmir Cwlich is an elevated val-
ley among high mountains) has a
severe winter climate and the na-
tives carry what is called a kangri.
This is a small brazier, filled with
burning eharet.,al, and is carried un-
derneath the clothing. It is the
li'arthenw+are, protected by wicker -
Work. When the bearer is in the
erect position the kangri hangs on
the abdomen, but when sitting it is
placed between the thighs. In Kash-
mir, no man, woman or child thinks
it possible to be comfortable in win-
ter without a kangri under the
!(!(thee. Usher writers have de-
fcribed this peculiar custom, and a
teference is made to it in the J3rlt-
tah EI_cyclopaed]a.
Recently some valuable additions
to our knowledge of kangri can-
cer have been made by Dr. Neve, the
head of a mission station a.t Kash-
mir. He proves that the disease is
ewe -anon, for he refers to nearly 500
oases. These cases _point indubit-
ably to local irritation—frequently
repeated burns from the kangri—as
the cause of the disease. In this re-
spect the subject of kangri can-
cer offers nothing now, for the fact
that cancer originates in local ir-
tit tion is generally accepted. —

Greece Ras Permanent Ezecutioner
In Greece the death penalty is said
to bo often pronounced, but the dif-
acult,eof obtaining executioners was
for a long time almost insuperable
it was at last surmounted by giving
to a anurderer the choice between his

Five Doctors Agreed There was no
Hope for Rim, but Re has Been
Strong and Well for Years.
Gelert, Ont., Aug. 24.—(,Special)
The wonderful cures by Dodd's Kid-
ney Pills published almost daily, re-
call the ease of Samuel Kernohan,
of this place. It is years now since
he wa.s cured, but as he is still cured
It is well worth recalling the► facts,
and Mr. Kernohan delights to re-
late them.
"Some time in December, 1893," he
says, "I was taken sick and, Laid up
for fourteen months. During my
confinement to my house and to my
bed, I w,a,s attended at various times
by live doctors. Three of thew de-
cided that my disease was Incur-
able, Floating Kidney, and two of
them that it was Spinal Disease. All
agreed on one thing—that my case
war> incurable.
"When my money was all gone, as
a matter oa.necessity, and as my last
hope I tried Dodd's Kidney Pills. I
had only taken three boxes when
I was able to walk about. I took in
all, eighteen boxes, when I was en-
tirely cured and quite able to work.
"Dodd's Kidney Pills are the best
friend I ever found."

Sea's Bottom is Falling.
Scientists tell us that, counting
from the sea level, the lowest bodyl
of water on the globe is the Cas -
plan sea. For centuries its surface
has been gradually settling down
until now it is eighty, -five feet lower
than that of its near neighbor, the
Black sea, which also lies far below;
the Ievel of the oceans. The common
conclusion all along has been that
the Caspian was simply losing its
waters by evaporation, but recent
investigation shows that this is not
the case. Soundings made and com-
pared with records of soundings
made over 100 years ago reveal the
astounding fact that there is even
a greater depth of water now than
then. This leaves but one hypothesis
that would seem at all tenable—
that the bottom of the sea is actu-
ally sinking.

WOMEN AS AERONAUTS.
The French Ladies are Conspicuous
nn Perilous Co,ltests.
Ballooning is becoming quite s.
womanis pastime, says the Paris
correeponhaent of the London Tele-
graph. No fewer than seven ladies
have been going in for an aerial
contest. Five of them were passen-
gens 111 balloons competing for a
navigation prize. In this contest the
aeronautsi have each to name a lo
callty before starting a,e their pro
bable destination. The balloonia
coming to earth nearest to the poi
cisme': by him is the winner. Th
five feminine passengers in que:stio
were Mesdames. Polyp's, Masson
1a Riviee, O'Gormannal ni Mile. dc: Ca
illon de Saint -Victor.
After these ladies had started from
the Aero Club grounds at St. Cloud,

won the Deutsch prize, the Duchess
d'Uzere and Madame Lemaire both

Club No. 3, of 1,0130 cubic metens,

tiemen on boaiel. Tile Duchess an
Madame Lemaire were both trying
for the "Lady Aeronaut's Challenge
Cup," presented by a sporting week-
ly and carried off last year by Mad-
ame Savaile.
The trophy; goes to the lady cover
Ing the longest distance in one bal
loon journey an the year. Madame
Savaile's record in 1902 was 253
miles, from Paris to NaeBrelsacl,
in Germany. Fight balloons, all
told, of the ordinary spherical -shape,
went up in the two present contests,
M. Santos -Dumont sailing over in his
navigable airship from Neuilly to see
them start. The Duchess d'Uzes, af-
ter travelling all night, only landed
in the plain of Sologne, near Orleans,
and has not, therefore, won the cup.
Madame Lemaire got no further than
St. 01100110/1,e, a northern suburb of Paris.
As the cup is to become finally the
property of the holder if her record
remains unbroken for a year, Madame
Savaile, who accomplished her trip
to Neu $,reisaeh. on July 1st, 1902,
stands a good chance of keeping the
trophy.
To the Santos -Dumont No. 9 has
fallen the honor d being the first
airship to be steered by a feminine
hand. The distinction of being the
first lady navigator of the air has
been secured by Mile. da Costa, a
young country -woman of Santos -
Dumont. The owner of the airship
relinquished his post at the wheel,
M1Ie. da Costa clambered up in the
car. and the balloon rose with the
lady' atone on board. Tito guiderope
was, 1t Is true, held by mechanics
down below, but Mile. da Costa took
the wheel and safely put the vessel
through one or two simple evolu-
tions. Thus guided, the airship con-
veyed the lady from Bagatelle to
the Polo Club grounds, where Mile.
da, Costa alighted, naturally rather
proud of herself, and was congra-
tulated by, her friends. A well known
actress of Iight comedy, who, as
long ago as two years, began beg-
ging and imploring M. Santos -Du-
mont to take her up in one of his
airships, is sow gnashing her teeth
with envy.

During the three months ending
March 81st, there were 300 per-

railroad accidents in the United
States. Other railroad casualties
brought the total number to 82'71
killed and 11,481 injured. The Boers
lost only 8,700 in killed during
three years of war with Great Bri-

that war in Africa is a great deal
