paper, just to hand, gives the fol-
lowing account of the sad occur-
rence
Lee Ayotte, an employe at the
clam of the Preens, Flume and Irri-
gation company, was accidentally
killed yesterday afternoon by the
giving way of a headgate; and P. C.
Wheeler, a fellow -workman, had a
thrilling experience, from which
his escape is little short of miracu-
lous. The Hien were employed in
repairing a headgate through
which the water runs into the
flilme 'from the reservoir. In some
way they lost control of the gate
and fifty tons of water came rush-
ing through upon them with a
force that knocked them both off
their feet and sent thein shooting
clown the fiu)ne. •
Ayotte struggled and endeavored
to grasp the sides of the flume and
pull himself out of the nater. In
so doing he raised himself above
the level of the water and was
dashed into a crossbeam support-
ing the trap of the flume. The
forgo of the blow was very great
and was responsible for his death.
His body Was swept 600 or 700
yards down the flume. 'Wheeler
owes his escape merely to tbe fact
that he lay perfectly still and
allowed the water to carry him
along 'notil its' force was spent.
He escaped without a scratch, but
he, too was carric d several hundred
,yards clown the flume.
Ayotte had been employed at the
dam but five days. Formerly lie
worked a5 foreman of an orchard,
but was aL recent arrival in Califor-
nia from, Sheebnygaan, Mich. lie
was & member• of the Knights of
the Maccabees and was probably
34 years old.
