The Cigarette.
Dr. C. A. Clinton, of the San-
Francisco Hoard of Education has
made a special steals of the effect
of cigarette smoking iunong the
public school children of that city,
and expresses himself in the fol-
lowing 1an,gllage.
I have watched this thing for a
long time and I say eahnly a.Il(1
deliberately that I believe cigarette
smoking is as bad a habit as opium
smoking.
(cigarette smoking . blunts the
whole nature and has an appalling
effect upon the system. It first
stimulates and thele stupifies the
nerves, and sends boys into con-
sumption.
It is true that in the States since
1899 the mane-111am.° of the cigar-
ette has decreased. It fell 25
millions in 1900 and 55 millions
more in 1901, but in Canada there
has been a, steady increase every
year for many years. In 1901) we
consumed 110 million, 121 million
in 1901, 134 million in 1902, which
is an increase over 1901 of 13 mil-
lion. Is it not terrible?
