selves to close our respective places of business, on the evenings of Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday of each week, at six o'clock sharp, commencing• with the first
Tuesday in March, 1003, and we agree to forfeit the sum of TEN DOLLARS to the
Village treasury for each and every violation of this pledge.

The customs collections of Cana-
da for eight months of the current
fiscal year are $23,434,042, an in-
crease of $2,768,832. In February
;Edono the collections were $2,681,-
170, an increase of °1351,844.

The hens of Little Utica, New
'Y'ork, tu'o going to work : Sundays
:this year to pay off a church debt.
Little Utica has one church, and it.
is desperately in need of money.
It is in a farming community and
.alt the church members are farm-
ers,. At its last meeting one of the
,:congregation suggested that each
•member should contribute all the
.eggs laid by the hens on Sunday
.during the next year and give the
7noney the eggs Would fetch to the
,church. Everybody agreed and
the hens Will leggin next Stinday.
Mr. Joseph Zettel, an old resident
of Hay township and for a short
time a citizen of Zurich, cried on
Sunday evening, the 1st inst., af-
ter an extended illness of some
months. Mr. Zettel lived for many
years at the Blind Line, a short
distance from town, where he car-
ried on farming, and was ,highly
respected by his neighbors, The
funeral took place on Thursday
morning at 0 o'clock, from his late
residence to St. Boniface cemetery,
where his remains were interred.
Ho leaves a wife, four sons and
three daughters, who mourn hie

funnral ceremony- was eoncitgeied
by Fattier Prud'homme, of St.
Peter's church, Drysdale, the resi-
dent priest, Father Valentine, be-
ing still at London Hospital,
Mr. R. R, Johnston purchased
the Dominion House from Mr, C.
L, Shoemaeher, and will take pos-
session shortly. The deal was
closed yesterday.

team to Mr. McLean of Kippen.
Mr. John Weseloh is installing a
Henderson tire -setter in his shop.

Mr. John E. Hoffman. Of Dash-
wood, was a visitor in town on
Monday. .
Mr. J. D. Merger has .been laid
up for the past week but is improv,
ing slowly.
Roads aro in a bad condition at
present and business in town is
rather quiet.
Mrs. Dennis of Exeter visited
with. Mr. and Mrs. J. 13. Dennis on
Wednesday.
Mr, Calvin Williams , of Port
Huron is visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. A. Williams.
• Mr. J. Eller, of Minnesota, is in
town to attend the funeral of his
father-in-law, Mr. Joseph Zettel.
Miss Steinbach has returned
from the millinery openings and is
busy preparing for the Spring
trade.
Reeve Lamont and Tp. Clerk
Hess attended the special meeting
of the Huron County Council at
Clinton on Wednesday.
The Hensall Flouring Mills are
running night and day and are in
want of a great quantity of wheat.

The boys and girls are enjoying
the first good skating of the season,
this week. The "little swamp" is
covered with tL good smooth coat.
- Mrs. J. H. Roedding of Tilson-
burg is visiting her parents Mr.
and Mrs. M. Zeller and other
friends. She arrived on Wednesday
evening.
The early closing of business
piu°ces commenced here on Tuesday
and is proving a success. Wo
hope the farmers will assist
all they can and do their evening
trailing on Monday Wednesday and
Saturday of each week.
Mr. John Deichert is again laid
up with appendicitis and left for,
Clinton, with his physician Dr:
Campbell, on Wednesday evening.

speedy return to health.
Reeve Lamont and the Council-
lors inspected the ground for the
proposed Schweltnn chain on Mon-
day and if reports are true the
reeve's big anatomy was nearly
submerged, but with the assistance
of those present he was safely
hauled to shore.
Mr. Henry Wurni, Sr., 'who has
been very low for the past few
weeks, is improving. Mr. Spall
is in his ninety-fourth year and
his recuperative powers at such .an
age are really wonderful. That he
will round. out the full hundred. is
the wish of his many friends.

The regular meeting of the W.
C. T. U. was held at the home of
Mrs. J. Geig'er,on Monday evening.
March 2nd. Miss Ella Rennie led
the devotional part, after which
Mrs. Heyrock took the business
])art, in which a letter was read
from Mrs, Whitesicles, Hudson,
Que., encouraging the W. 0. T. U.
members. After the business part,
the members went at making a
quilt, after which the meeting
closed with singing the Temperance
Doxology.

THE Council of the County of Huron
1 will hold a special mPeting in the
Town Hall, in Clinton, on March the 4th
next, at 10 o'clock, ,t. m., to meet repre-
sentative men from elieh municipality in
the County, and consider the question of
a good road system in this County. Any
other County business may be considered
at :this meeting.

Peine, a former resident of this
place. He was p rolrrietor of the
Commercial TI tel for some years
and about fur years ago removed.

Mr. Peter Foster trade a last call
on friends in this neighborhood
before leaving for Michigan. Many
of their fair sex, who are just
beginning to find out Peter's muny
good qualities wish he would stop
longer with them.

.john Johnston has re-engaged
with Mr. Geo. Douglas for the
summer. his is John's second
summer with the same boss, which
speaks well for both parties,
