DISTRESSING CASE OF CON-
SUMPTION.
Four of One Family Pass Away—Last
Daughter Now I11.
A Toronto clergyman tells of a family
in his congregation, which consisted of
the mother and five children—the father
being dead—four of whom in a few years
have fallen victims to consumption and
died. And now the fifth, a daughter,
who is employed in the office of a whole-
saler, and who has been the one source of
support to the mother, is obliged to leave
her work, realizing that she also—mainly,
it is believed, as a result of nursing her
brothers and sisters—has contracted this
dread disease. Kind friends are interest-
ing themselves in the case, but the diffi-
auity inet with is to send her to a place
where the proper care and treatment will
bo given.
ANOTHER EDUCATIONAL SHOW.
Draft Horse Nen in Line.
For a number of years Canadian
horses met with a ready sale at
good prices, and then carne a
period during which even the best
were scarcely saleable, and inferior
stock could hardly be given away.
The importation of high class
stallions almost ceased and the
trade became generally dem-
oralized. During the last two or
three years, business has been
gradually reviving and the past
year has seen a large number of
importations of pure bred. stallions
for breeding purposes. The draft
horse is undoubtedly the most
satisfactory type for the farmer to
breed. Good heavy horses weigh-
ing from 1,500 lbs. upwards and of
good quality are likely to meet
with a ready sale for some time to
come. Stich horses are tractable
and easily broken and while await-
ing sale can be readily used for any
sort of farm work, thus paying for
their keep which the fancy horses
rarely do.
To produce horses at a profit it
is highly desirable that only the
best class of registered stallions be
used. In order to facilitate the
selection of such stallions arrange
merits have been made to
bold, at Grand's Repository,
Toronto, on the 4th ,5th,anci Gth,of
Feby., a Show of Heavy Draft
stallions with a prize list ' amount,,
ing to some $1,500, at which an
interesting programme of educa-
tional addressing will be provided
by expert horsemen. The breeders
of heavy horses have for some time
complained that the Toronto Horse
Show usually held in the latter
part of April or the beginning of
May. was so late as to be incon-
venient for both buyers and sellers.
Therefore it has been thought
(advisable to hol4 p. show in Feb.
so that private breeders, as well as
stallion syndicates and other
associations may have ample time,
to make their selection for the
coming season. The dates Alava
beei fixed
thus early r]
y
in order r to
meet the wishes not only of exhibi-
tors, bilt of buyers from all parts
of the poriz 11to , and it is hoped
that the Show will be liberally pat-
ronized both. by exhibitors and
v isitOrs.
:C'. W. Ilodson,
Line Stock Commissioner,
It is for such cases as this—and there
is hardly a clergyman in any city who is
not constantly meeting such appeals—
that the new Free Consumptive Hospital,
under tbo auspices of the National Sani-
tarium Association, is being built. The
people of Canada as a whole must feel
grateful to Mr. W. J. Gage and the
executors of the late ITart A. Massey, who
out of their own funds have erected this
building. But before it can be occupied
it must bo furnishes with beds and other
Proper furnishings and appointments.
The National Sanitarium Association,
already carrying a heavy debt, are not
able to furnish the new building so gene-
rously placed at their disposal, and are ap-
pealing to citizens generally the Dominion
over for ,10,000 for this purpose.
It does not need the suggestion that
this is the most pressing of all charities
at this time, for the public are fully
awakened to tho widespread character of
consumption, and also to the feet, ns de-
inonstrated by the best medical authori-
ties, that when this disease is taken hold
of in its early, stages it, as much as any
other disease, is curable, The new hospi-
tal, just so soon as the money is raised to
complete the furnishings, will be ready
to receive fifty patients, free of charge --
even their railway fare will not be a tax
upon then.
Chief Justice Sir Wm, It Meredith, 4
Lamport Ave, Torouto, has kindly con-
sented to receive contributions for the
Free Consumptive Hospital; or they can

destroyed 0,000 lives, and terminat-
ing commerce in the port. Those
facts made plain to government
officials that the sleep water harbor
at Galveston had been• built at the
wrong end of Galveston Bay,. and
t'iat the disaster was liable to be
repeated should similar conditions
again arise in the Gulf. Galveston
has been almost entirely rebuilt,
the error in harbor construction is
baing repaired, and the city is put
in a fair way to grow and increase
in importance without fear of fu-
ture storms.
Galvcstan is on an island, L- it, the
new harbor, La Porte, is located. on
the mainland. A retaixiing wall
extends from LaPorte to Galveston
a distance of twenty-six miles.
The channel connecting the two
places is 200 feet wide. La Porte
is located on a high bluff, a situ-
ation permitting great future
growth in population There is
room, it is said, for a city contain-
ing 5,000,000 people.
Though the catastrophe which
came upon Galveston in 1900 was
severe, it has in the end brought
no small advantage to the city and
to the commerce of the Gulf States.
