New York, Jan. 21.—By the
arrest of a man who the police say
is William G. Furlong, an alleged
scheme to fleece the public was
brought to light to -day. The
police say that Furlong has been
advertising in New York and Phila-
delphia pa.pers for a gentleman who
would 'be willing to marry a lady
he had never met, and. from whom
he would be expected to secure a
divorce as soon as possible after
the marriage, rho advertisements
said it was necessary, in order to
settle an estate, for the lady to
marry and the man accepted -would
receive $20,000. As soon as an
answer was received a circular

picture of the lady. The police say
five thousand applications were
received, and that Furlong also
secured money by advertising for
applicants for a position. Furlong
