The deceased was born near Brock- ville, in the county of Leeds, in the year 1830. When quite a young man he took up a forest farm in the township of Hibbert, county of Perth, where he hewed out a com- fortable home, He was widely known for his charitable, genial disposition; his home was always open to the stranger, who never was turned away empty-handed or hungry. In word and deed he was a father to the fatherless, and in business natters his judgment and counsel was often sought, being upright and honorable in all his dealings. 13e never sought public office of any kind but was portion. larly fond of his home attachments, was twice married, his first wife being a daughter of the ]ate John Glenn, of the township of Usborne, by whom he was left two daughters Mrs. R. Cole of the township of Hay, Mrs. J. Beatty of Varna. His second wife was Mrs. Sarah Stone, of near Ingersoll, who left him also two daughters, Mrs. H McDougall, who resides on the Horton home- stead in the township of Hibbert, and Mrs. J. D. Atkinson, of town, at whose home he passed away. In religion he was of the church of England, the funeral service being impressively conducted by the Rev D. W. Collins, Rector of Trivitt Memorial. Tho remains were in- terred in MoTaggart's cemetery, whence they were borne by his four son -in law, his stop -son and step -son-in-law, representing the three families, and were followed by a long concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. The funeral on Sunday morning, was largely attended. Mr. Hahn passed away Saturday morning, after some months suffer- ing of some stomach trouble. His funeral on Tuesday afternoon, was very largely attended showing the respect in which he was held by those who knew him best. "Both the above funeral- were conducted by Rev. The Xmas entertainment in con- nection with the Evangelical church, will be held on the evening of Dec. 23rd, when a good program will be rendered. Mr E. Welton, who has been working in St. Clemens for some time, is now holidaying at his home here. Nest Sunday, the new Lutheran church, will be formally opened and dedicated. Three services will be held on Sunday, in the morning German, and at both afternoon and evening, there will be both English and German. This is a fine church edifice, and reflects great credit on its pastor and congregation. Many loversof pumpkin pies ob- ject to the flat taste of the canned article. ' TRUE GENTLEMAN A nian that's clean inside and outside ; who neither looks up to the rich nor down on the poor ; who can lose without squealing and who -can win without bragging ; considerate to women, children and old people ; who is too brave to lio, too generous to oheat, and too sen- sible to loaf ; and who takes his share of the world's goods and lets other people have theirs, is our idea of a true gentleman. --Pen Prophet, It looks as though the .British Government will turn the tables on the militant "suffragettes." The shrieking sisterhood wants only a limited franchise for women based upon property qualifications. Mr. Asquith has said that any Ivo. man's franchise bill must put 'wo- men on the same footing as mon, and the measure which Mr. Lloyd. George says will be brought down before parliament dissolves, will probably give all women the bal- lot. There is sound political strat- egy in this broader view. The suifragettea belong almost exclusi- vely to the aristocracy or upper middle class, and their inclinations lean to the Conservative sido. They might be useful allies of the Un- ionist party as are the Primrose dames. But if the women 'of the other Classes 'get the ballot :the balance .of advantage County Officials Salaries, One of the matters disposed of at the December session of the county council of last week on was the fix- ing of the salariers of the county officials for a period of five years, in accordance with a resolution passed at a previous meeting of the council. This is with the idea of doing away with repeated applica- tions for increases. The committee appointed to deal with the matter secured information from the other counties in the Province as is sala- ries paid there and selected four- teen counties as nearly similar to Huron as possible in situation, size and amount of business done, and reported that with one or two ex- ceptions the salaries paid in Huron county were above the average paid in those counties. The coin mittee recommended the following increases however : Treasurer -$50; clerk, $50 ; county engineer, $200 ; matron of the house of refuge, x$550 ; assistant matron, $25; physician of the house of refuge, $50; inspector of the house of refuge, $25, In com- mittee further increases were de - aided on : $50 to the physician of the house of refuge. $25 to the chaplain of the house of refuge and $25 to the caretaker of the court house. I have used Chamberlain's Stom- ach and Liver Tablets for some time, and can testify that they have done me more good than any tablets I have ever used. My troub- le was a heavy dull feeling after eating.—David Freeman, Kempt, Nova Scotia. These tablets streng- then the stomach and improve the digestion. They also regulate the liver and bowels. They are far superior to pills but cost no more. Get a free sample at J J Merner's store and see what a splendid medi- cine it is. Very little is being said about municipal matters for 1909, al- though nomination is only a few weeks off. lb seems that the rate- payers are fairly well satisfied with the present reeve and council- lors and they will likely go back by acclamation. The town trustees seem also to have given good satis- faction, and we will not look for a big scramble for these offices.
