Robert Melvin, a leading citizen of Guelph, took ill on his way home from New York, and died at the Waldorf Hotel in Hami1Son. Two freight trains on the C. P. R. collided herr Stiekney. Fireman Robert Jolinson'of St, John, N. B., was roasted alive, and Engineer Charles Humphrey had his back and both legs broken. Wheat in Saskatchewan has in. creased 800 per cent in ten years. Hon. The first eealing schooner to re- turn from the north is at Victoria with five sea otter skins and 471 sealskins. 11. H. Mayor Foster, of Haileybury, was assessed$i,000 damages for injuries received in his mill by an employe, one Schelmer. One hundred and fifty of the pioneers of Prince Rupert have bound themselves under oath not to employ Asiatic labor. Chas. Palmer, of Merlin, for sel- ling liquor on two occasions with- out a license, was sentenced to six months on each charge. Five writs asking for ;x15,000 damages. were issued at Chatham on behalf of the Donovan family, against the 0. W. and L. Liberal prizes are awarded for the general competition, in which all fruit growers may enter, and a grant of 8825 from the County Council has been added to the Provincial prizes in the county competitions. County Clerk Lane is acting as secretary for the com- mittee who are endeavoring to col- lect the county exhibit, and he will be glad to send copies of the prize list and all desired information to anyone asking same. All express charges to Goderich, and thence to Toronto will be paid, so that ex- hibitors are at little or no expense. By all means let anyone having good fruit specimens arrange to send thein to Mr. Lane, so that our county may, as before lead in the displays at this splendid exhibition Exhibits must be at Goderich not later than Nov. 2nd.
