With prices on almost every thing steadily advancing one is the more ready to notice the fact of a genuine work down. And yet once more the drinking man has been discounted. Only recently a pro- minent business house in Chicago put itself on record against the drinl: evil in these words : "We will not. to our knowledge, place in our business a man who drinks, and, even though a man should apply for a position whose ability and other all-round qualifi- cations would seem to fit hien for the position, if we knew or discov- ered that he was a drinking man, we should decline to consider. his application. Any man in our em- ploy who acquires the habit of drink, even though moderately, is to a certain extent marked down in our estimation, and unless we can remove from Dim this serious fault and show him his error, we feel compelled to do without his . service." Thut is bard headed business cense. It is not very ptiilenthrop- ie. It is simply an investment of money in bneiness to make more {woney. The man who drinks does ! not further the interests of this i business and he must give way to I the man who is sober. The drink. ing Hien "marked down" and marked out. That is what business does. Who shall say that this is Inot fair where a clear head and a i steady hand are so mnoh needed? {Even the "Moderate Drinker" does I not have to strain his eyes to see the writing on the wall. To show their familia- rity with the ways of the world. they become) the most devoted slaves to the custom. They have less strength than older men to withstand convention and render themselves singular among their associates, One of the most prae- tiral measures the rational temper- ance reformer could promote would be a social campaign to weaken the tyranny of the treating system. Let it become lura form to treat, and treating will die out, as the gross after dinner drinking of a lirevioiis generation has died out. It is not so long since the retire. menti of the Iadies at the close of dinner was a necessity, because of the eonditinn of inebriety to which the male diners had arrived, and of the worse state to which they would sink before the light, of dawn broke through the dining room windows. It is now consid- ered bad forret to show tr. a least sign of alcoholic indulgence at table and the three bottle man is the memory of a gross past. Social sentiment has wrought the change. Let an invitation to a man to take a, drink at a bar to be considered a reflection upon his ability to bay himself one, and there will be very little more treating. -Stratford Herald.
