ZELLER. FRIDAY SEPT. 4th 1908 W. C. T. U. THE DEACON'S CIDER. On some shavings and rags crouched the wreck of a mall, and sitting near by was another man considerably yonnger but alines egnally evretchcytl In appearance "Dana," said the woman, speakin to the latter, "you see I hay found you out again. I learned onl3r this morning where you were. but I had not courage to come alone, and while I was praying in rnsr heart I was directed to this lady whom. I am sure you have heard of and will be glad to know." She whispered a few yrords to the man she called "Dana," then hastily grasping my hands said, as the tears literally poured down her cheeks, "0 God help you! God help you !" and nefore I could collect myself she ran np the steps and wits gone. After a little preliminary talk I said, "I guess I can spell it all out with three letters, R n.m." "No," said the pian, with tones into which he put all the force he could commands, "it's a longer, meaner, more devilish word—Cider 1" He screamed it over several tinges. then added, "there's hell in it, every time." Diving our talk and in the interviews since, I learned his story. He Was an orphan boy. 'His father went down to a drunk- ard's hopeless grave, and his moth. er died of grief and shame. Hie childhood Was spent in an alias house. At the age of ten years he went to live with Deacon --- "The deacon was a good sort of roan, had prayer Sunday morn- ing—there was no time for them on other days ; everybody had all the cider they wanted, for the deo, con wasn't stingy 'bout that, and 1 had to go to meeting Sunday nights 'cause he said he was responsible for his household. 1 Maid there eight years, batt he never spoke to me about my soul, and I never heard him pray for me but once— then 1 got drunk on Hider one spring and the next morning he asked hoc? 'to shots me the folly of making a beast of 'Myself.' I gent away soon after and was gone sone years. For most three of theta I drank constantly • then I oformed, and after a while became a carist ion, 1 thought. 1 earned good wag- es and wasn't a bad looking fellow; and it seemed to me I'd like to go back to the old town and go to my mother':: grave. Daurottche was cremated by his own will, and the ashes cast into the Detroit River by the Knights of Pythias. John Greer, aged seventeen, of Peterboro, was fatally injured by an explosion of gasoline. There was another ee:plosion at Lhatranl, and Frank Hathaway received some nasty wounds. Royal Chickens of Japan. "The most beautiful and extra, ordinary ohickens in the world are those bred by the royal family of Japan, the privilege of raising them not being accorded to any of the Mikac'lo's .inbjects," said de Courcey, of Yokohama, at the Rennert. "These chickens are celebrated for the wonderful grow- th of their tail feathers, a full- grown rooster's tail often reaching tt length of 20 feet. The tail is of a lovely creep blue shade, while the - 'hods- is buff, and about the neck is a, white ring. A pair of these chickens has been known to sell to a wealthy Englishman for $1,000 on condition that he would take them out of the country. "I believe that ere long the spec - les will entirely disappear, as I heard before leaving Japan that it was the intention of his Majesty to stop their breeding." --Baltimore .Atuerican, • g e Good for Biliousness "I took two of (Jhalnberlain's Stomach and Live r Tablets hist night, and T feel fifty per cent bet- ter than I have for weeks, sav s J.
