With this iss ue THE HERALD en-
ters upon another year. The first
issue appeared the first week in
August 1900, and, thanks to our
advertisers and subscribers our
weekly is steadily gaining ground
and is becoming increasingly popu-

up the town and to uphold its good
name as a business centre, we be-
lieve has borne good fruit, and as
in the past, our best efforts will be
put forward to advance the inter-
ests of Zurich and its people. We
wish to thank our many patrons
for their support, and if a good
word can be said for your local
paper, say it. We enter the nineth
year with every confideuce of con-
tinued prosperity and by your
loyal support THE HERALD can be
made a still greater influence for
the up building of our busy little
town, than it has been in the past.

One hundred and .four children
died at Montreal last week,
• Two Belleville youths charged
with robbing stores were arrested
at Niagara Falls.
Elliott J. Kimball was committed
for trial at Tilbury for shooting
William Healey.
The vote of the C. P. R. mechan-
ics against accepting the award. of
the Winnipeg Board was 97.3 per
cent.
The forest fires started up again
in the. Kootenay Valley, and the
town of Michel was burned.
The C. P. R. are said to be pre-
paring to make Montreal the sum-
mer port for their Atlantic steam-
ers.
Carl Lee of Brockville, aged
fifteen, was given carbolic acid by
his nurse in mistake, and died in a
few minutes.
Whether because of the growth
of the prohibition movement in
Canada or the present financial
stringency, says a despatch from
Ottawa to the Toronto Globe this
week, advocates of temperance may
regard as significant the fact that
the,returns of the Inland Revenue
Department for the past six months
show there bas been a decided de-
crease in the amount of liquor
consumed in Canada. For the
months of November, 1907, to April
1908, inclusive, the aggregate in-
ternal revenue receipts from the
liquor traffic show a decrease of
nearly $450,000, or over ten per
cent. In November the decrease
was, in round numbers, $104,000 ;
in December, $58.000 ; in January,
$30,000 ; in February, $53.000 ; in
March, $62.000; and in April $140,-
000. The decrease in the receipts
for the last month as compared
with April, 1907, was twenty per
sent.
The decrease in the production
and consumption of liquor may, of
course, be only temporary, but it is
significant that it has taken plane
despite a time of rapid growth in
the population, and reflects a simi-
lar shrinkage in liquor production
in the United States, where during
the first ninety days of 1908 there
was a shrinkage of nearly $25,000,-
000 in the quantity of liquor manu-
factured. Of this decrease in
manufacture in the States approxi-
mately sixty' per cent., or about
$14,500.,000,•is whiskey production,
and forty per cent„ or $9,880,000,
represents the falling off in the
beer -making business. No internal
revenue figures in forty years
have shown such an astonishing
decline in the liquor production of
the States.
The figures above given in re-
spect to both Canada and the
States may be due to exceptional
causes, but it is not improbable
that the growth of the temperance
movement in both countries, the
passing of Local Option by-laws,
etc., may have had a large effect
in producing such a result.
While Business in some lines
may be dull, farmers were never
more encouraged as regards fruit
growing than at the present sea-
son. High prices for all classes
of fruit have been obtained the
past season, and. there is as a con-
sequence, an increased demand for
nursery stock.
Our stock is complete in every
department including a new list of
specialties which we alone handle.
• The right man will obtain a
permanent situation with territory
reserved for him. Pay weekly.

"Hecla" Furnace
Means Perfect Heating
without Gas, Dust or Smoke.
The «Hecla" Furnace is the only
Furnace with Fused Joints.
These Joints are made by fusing the steel
and cast iron parts together at white heat
making an indestructible joint. Fused
Joints are permanently airtight. Even
after zo years' use they will not work
loose or leak. They insure absolute
freedom from dust, smoke and gas.
The Steel -Ribbed Fire Pot used on the "Hecla"
Furnace has three times as much radiating surface
as any other style of fire pot. It will save fuel for
you, and give you more heat. It extracts from the
Are, heat that would otherwise go up the chimney.
I,et ns show you the 1905 " Hecla" and explain all
the latest improvements in detail.
