THE COMMON ENEMY.
It may seriously be questioned
whether the people generally have
any correct idea of the awful re-
sults of the liquor traffic. We
have become so accustomed to hear
of its work that little thought is
given to the tragedies that are
happening around us every day.
The Toronto papers announced
that ayoung .man had fallen from
the stairway in the. City Hall, and
had been killed. In the most
mutter -of -fact way the papers
added, that "the nian was intoxica-
ted when the accident occurred."
A woman was found dead one
morning ` in an outhouse. The
only explanation that could be
gleaned was that"two black beer
bottles were found lying close be-
side her."
The report of the execution of a
man for murder states that "the
murderer was drunk when the
crime was cbrnnrnitted." .And so it
goes on- Every clay brings tidings
of the awful deeds that are being
oonamitted by men who are under
the influence of liquor. It seems
strange that any man can read the
daily papers without becoming a
sworn enemy of the liquor traffic,
the cauee of so much poverty
misery and crimesi
